Netflix’s new movie FEEL THE BEAT centers on remembering what matters most in life–family.
The comedy stars Sofia Carson (DESCENDANTS) as April, a dancer trying to land a role dancing on Broadway. When things don’t go as planned, April finds herself back in her small hometown in Wisconsin teaching a dance class of young girls.
She told Movieguide®’s Evy Baehr Carroll about how her character learns the lesson that family is the most important thing.
“She [April] kind of loses herself in her dance and obsesses with being the most perfect dancer she can possibly be. And she, you know, forgets what really matters in life. And that is, being home,” she said. “Being home means being with people that you love and surrounded with those that you love and loving them in return and knowing that it’s really all that matters in life and what truly fills us.”
In the movie, April’s mother left when she was young. Carson revealed that this loss plays into her character’s diluted thought process that her home and her family aren’t enough.

“I think April loses herself in her wanting to fill the void inside of her with something else in something bigger, trying to be something that she’s not, thinking that who she is and where she comes from isn’t enough,” Carson said.
On top of showing audiences that family matters most, the actress also talked about another lesson her character teaches the girls.
“I love that April would teach them so much about the hard work, the tenacity, the discipline that goes into either following your dreams in this business or in any business.”
She continued, “But also to learn from her in that doing this on your own is not easy and it’s not right either. We should be surrounded by those that we love and by family and be reminded that that’s what matters most.”
FEEL THE BEAT is mostly family-friendly; Carson takes this into consideration before she accepts a role.
She said, “It’s been a privilege in my career to be able to be some sort of a role model to young women everywhere. I take it very seriously.”
