A survey of 4,000 people by Gallup shows that Republicans consider themselves significantly more healthy, mentally, than Democrats and Independents.
In fact, 58% of Republicans report having “excellent” mental health, but only 43% of Independents and only 38% of Democrats report excellent mental health.
Gallup says that this basic pattern persists even when factoring out the higher income levels of Republicans, their higher education levels, their higher marriage levels, and their higher church attendance. Thus, Frank Newport of Gallup writes, “Being a Republican appears to have an independent relationship on positive mental health above and beyond what can be explained by these other types of demographic and lifestyle variables.”
