Sadie Robertson Huff on Anxiety: ‘This is Not Who God Created Me To Be’

In a new podcast episode, Sadie Robertson Huff and husband Christian sat down with Madison and Grant Troutt to discuss overcoming anxiety in relationships.

Both couples shared that they had not-so-great first dates, which led to some worries about what would happen on a second date. Huff said that, while apprehensive about hanging out with Christian again, she soon found herself thinking, “I think this is going to work out. I think I’m going to be in love with this guy.”

“But then I got in my head because I struggle with anxiety,” she continued, listing worries about her work life getting in the way of being able to see Christian. “I totally just started throwing myself in the dumps…and went to break up with him.”

Huff didn’t end up breaking up with Christian, and he joked that he never even knew she was considering it until six months after they began dating.

Madison and Grant also shared how anxiety played a role in their relationship early on. Speaking about Grant’s struggles with anxiety, Madison said, “[The anxiety] impacts more than just that person. It was impacting our relationship.”

“I finally looked at him and said, ‘There is such a calling on your life, and I don’t want to see you just stand in agreement with anxiety…Let’s tackle it spiritually, and be in prayer, and not give the enemy a foothold in this area of your life,’” she said.

Huff added that the increased awareness about mental health issues has allowed some to become too comfortable accepting their anxiety.

“That is actually not who God created me to be,” she said of her view of herself as an anxious person. “If that is my identity and I claim that as my identity, then I’m always going to be anxious…identifying with your weakness and letting it become who you are is such a big problem because it keeps you from all that God has for you.”

Huff often speaks about her battles with anxiety and how she works to overcome them.

“I went through postpartum anxiety, which I didn’t really see coming because I had been living free of anxiety for maybe like two years at that point, and then it just slapped me in the face,” she said in an episode of her podcast. “I wanted to do this [podcast] again even before I had the baby to remind me of the truth that I found and the ways out of fear that I found.”

Huff continued, “This is not something new that people are anxious or people worry, I mean Jesus addressed it…over and over again. Old Testament, New Testament, so it’s not something new. God has an abundant life for us, he has a life and he tells us ‘do not fear for I am with you’. And you know, when we are followers of Jesus, he tells us, he’s like, I’m going, and I’m leaving the spirit with you. We have the spirit of God in us, so we have we should be walking differently.”

She has also shared how her faith has gotten her through those moments of fear and doubt.

“The Lord said something so sweet to my heart,” Huff told Entertainment Tonight. “I just felt like God was saying, ‘I’m not calling you to be this perfect person. I’m actually just calling you to be a sister and a friend to those who don’t have a sister and a friend,'” she explains. “I can be confident because I was created on purpose for a purpose.”

She continued, “All of a sudden I was so empowered to do everything that I’m doing now. That’s just my story, but man, that’s why my faith is so important to me.”
