Texans Quarterback Wants to Stop Swearing — Here’s Why
By Movieguide® Contributor
Houston Texans quarterback CJ Stroud is opening up about why he wants to stop using profanity.
“I think about like how I was brought up, and that’s not how I was raised,” he said on Sports Spectrum’s podcast about when he noticed he was swearing. “And I don’t know where it started, but I know it needs to stop.”
“I was watching an interview that I was doing a couple days ago, and I’m like, ‘Man, like, why am I saying this or I’m saying that?’ Like, that’s not even me. I don’t know where, and then what he was saying is like, man sometimes like the issue isn’t necessarily the issue. It’s the emotion that comes with it,” Stroud explained.
“So, like when you get emotional about something, like when I get emotional about football, I’m just feeling the emotion that I get on the field,” he said. “I like start to play the game or feed into the profanity, you know? And I caught it. I’m like, ‘Hold on. This isn’t right.’ You know what I mean?”
He was convicted of the habit when he was reading through James 3, explaining, “I can’t proclaim that I love God and have like a wild mouth. Like that just doesn’t make sense to me. It’s hypocritical.”
The quarterback recognizes that if he wants to set an example for Christ, he needs to watch his language.
“And I remember watching a TikTok. I get a lot of my faith videos on TikTok,” Stroud added. “And I remember watching a certain guy, he was in prison for like 20 something years. And that was a thing that he learned while he was in prison. He was like, ‘Man, there was guys who I would try to lead to Christ, but they’re like man, you talk like I do.’ And he was like, ‘They wouldn’t follow me after that type of leadership. I gotta be better.’ So, that’s how I just want to get better with it.”

Stroud is gearing up for his second NFL season by looking to the Bible for strength.
“‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future,'” he posted, quoting Jeremiah 29:11.
Throughout his rookie season, Stroud relied on God.
“For me, it’s a lot of prayer,” he said of how he gets through life’s hurdles. “A lot of just knowing that God wouldn’t put anything on me that I can’t handle.”
“I don’t deserve His grace and His mercy, but He still gives it to me, and I love Him for that…I think God made me like that.”
Movieguide® previously reported on Stroud’s faith:
Houston Texans quarterback CJ Stroud had a phenomenal first season in the NFL, taking home the Rookie of the Year trophy, but despite his athletic abilities, he wants to be known for his deep faith in Jesus Christ.
Stroud revealed his main goal for his life while talking with Faith on the Field.
“I want other people to know that they don’t have to rely on themselves or worldly things; they can rely on the Lord,” he said. “That’s really the only way you can truly be peaceful and truly know what true love is.”
While he knows being open about his faith draws attention to himself, he doesn’t do it to elevate his status.
“It’s not about me trying to push their agenda or anything,” Stroud said. “It’s really just about Him and His love and His grace and His mercy. So I just want other people to be able to feel that.”
