THE CHOSEN Remains In The Box Office Top 10 For Second Straight Week

By Movieguide® Contributor

The first two episodes of the third season of THE CHOSEN were released in theaters this Thanksgiving, outperforming big Hollywood movies at the box office.

For the second straight week, THE CHOSEN’s episodes made it into the Top 10 list of high-earning movies at the box office.

On week two, THE CHOSEN made No. 9 on the box office ranking list, with $1.6 million in gross ticket sales. Their week one ranking was No. 3, with $8.7 million in ticket sales.

For comparison, SHE SAID, a movie about the journalists who broke the story about Harvey Weinstein’s pattern of sexual abuse, came in at No. 10 on its second week, making $1.1 million.

Many are pointing out that THE CHOSEN’s box office success is sending a message to Hollywood about the kind of content that sells tickets.

“The success of THE CHOSEN shows there is money Hollywood is leaving on the table, but the audience is one they don’t understand,” said Hunter Duesing, a film teacher and co-host of the Midnight Movie Cowboys podcast. “Films like SHE SAID are fashionable for people in the media, but don’t have much appeal outside of a small group.”

Movieguide® previously reported on THE CHOSEN’s box office success:

THE CHOSEN recently released the first two episodes of the highly anticipated Season 3 of their show about the life and ministry of Jesus Christ.

The fathom event earned $8.2 million over its opening weekend, putting it behind blockbuster Marvel movie WAKANDA FOREVER and the star-studded horror movie, THE MENU.

“For the second year in a row, The Chosen is capturing the imagination of moviegoers around the country. After the overwhelming response of Chosen fans–and now Wingfeather Saga fans at a packed theatrical event in Nashville last week–we’re seeing that the same audiences who have helped us break streaming records can have similar impact at the box office,” Neal Harmon, CEO of Angel Studios, said before the series release. “And, in addition to the estimated $3.7 million Friday, based on last year’s Chosen special, we expect The Chosen Season 3 Sunday sales to exceed Saturday’s, partially driven by a strong showing anticipated on Sunday night.”

Last year, Angel Studios released CHRISTMAS WITH THE CHOSEN in theaters, which finished at No. 4 at the box office in its opening weekend.
