This 90’s R&B Singer Gave Up Fame for Faith

By Tess Farrand, Contributing Writer

Let’s take a time machine, shall we? We’re back in the 1990’s where parachute pants and boom boxes ruled. Chances are you might’ve been jamming to a popular song 1995 hit, “This Is How We Do It,” by Montell Jordan.

Back in the day, Jordan had a monopoly on the music scene. Here’s one thing you maybe didn’t know: Jordan is a born-again Christian!

Jordan, who stands at 6’8,” now serves as an Executive Pastor at Victory World Church in Norcross, Georgia where he preaches and gives inspirational sermons on the power of music and how culture impacts believers’ walks of faith.

Jordan’s testimony is powerful. Most people are unaware that before entering into full-time ministry, Jordan was nominated for a Grammy award and his songs have served as part of the soundtrack for movies like PITCH PERFECT 2, THIS MEANS WAR, and DOCTOR DOOLITTLE.

Montell also did some acting in THE FIGHTING TEMPTATIONS, JOHNNY BRAVO (voice credit). More recently, Jordan played Brian Mullenax in THE LIST which follows a man’s struggle to include God’s plan in his daily life.

In an interview on OWN Network called, Jordan spoke of his move into ministry where he was at first “reluctant” to be called Pastor. He at first struggled with being an R&B singer who was now leading people in worship, baptizing and marrying people, but with a smile on his face he says, “now I’m pastor Montell, and I’m cool with that.”

The road to ministry wasn’t always easy. Jordan and his wife Kristin expensed the hardships of the industry. Infidelity and stability issues were matter’s the couple had to push through and resolved. Despite all the ups and downs, Montell and Kristen have been married for over 20 years and have five children. “We chose marriage over music… we chose faith over fame…simply from the standpoint of, we wanted something that mattered.”

In fact, the Jordan’s have a book that released in late 2017 that details their struggle and perseverance titled, “This Is How We Do It! Making Your Marriage A Masterpiece.” Additionally, their joint website, www.montellandkristin.com, has resources for a couple to pursue Godly marriages including a blog and a multi-week bible study.

In an interview with Ebony magazine, he spoke on the idea of stardom, saying, “There’s a promise that God gives to Abraham in the Bible … ‘I’ll make you famous. I’ll make your name great.’ There’s a difference between God making you famous, and you making you famous.”

Jordan has almost 32 thousand followers on Twitter and constantly posts above the love he has for his church and family.

Keep up the good work Montell! Sources: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HOPcb945J3w
