IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE is the Christmas movie classic, starring Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed. It’s about the struggling owner of a small-town savings and loan company who discovers, with the help of a quirky angel named Clarence, that he’s the richest man in the world. After years of struggling to make ends meet, George Bailey contemplates suicide when his forgetful uncle accidentally misplaces $8,000. George’s family and friends are praying to God for him, however. As a result, God sends a bumbling but lovable angel who happens upon the one thing that will remind George he’s really led a wonderful life.

A CHRISTMAS STORY
Families on the short stories of Midwestern humorist Jean Shepherd, A CHRISTMAS STORY is a 1940’s family comedy about a 9-year-old who wants a Red Ryder BB gun for Christmas. Children may enjoy the movie, as it skillfully explores dilemmas and taboo subjects from their point-of-view and sense of humor. However, any positive qualities are marred by a subtle implication that children are a whole lot smarter than their parents.

THE GRINCH
THE GRINCH is a precious, delightful, superbly made movie. The colorful animation shows incredible imagination. The humor is delightful. The love is heartwarming. It’s well-designed, well-written and well-organized. The movie’s message is that Christmas can triumph over the meanest, most alienated heart. It features loving parents and children, a joyous community of inspired Whos, and a terrific character arc for the Grinch. Plus, it has great Christmas carols focusing on Jesus Christ and His redemptive love. MOVIEGUIDE® fell in love with THE GRINCH (2018). We think you will too.

ELF
ELF is a humorous Christmas movie meant to take advantage of the market with the likes of THE SANTA CLAUSE, CHRISTMAS STORY, and THE GRINCH. Having absolutely nothing to do with Christianity, it stays with the premise that the highest and best use of Christmas is to “bring out the good” in everyone. Other than the humanistic view of Christmas, the only objectionable parts are when Buddy tells a beautiful co-worker that when he sees her, his “tongue” swells, his heart beats faster, etc. There is no sex, or other innuendo, and most children would not pick up on this line. While Buddy’s father is in a “brain storming session” with his writers, one has the idea for a book with a family of asparagus who are embarrassed about their pee smelling bad.
