The New York Yankees newest relief pitcher, Clay Holmes, discussed how he learned patience and how it originated from his faith in God.

Holmes played seven years in the minor leagues and another 3 years in Pittsburgh before ultimately landing in New York.

In 2019, while still in Pittsburgh, Holmes questioned his baseball career. He placed his identity in baseball rather than in God.

“I just want to experience God working His power in my life,” Holmes told Sports Spectrum on that time.

“There’s gotta be more to life than just hanging my hat on the identity of this baseball thing. … When I think back on that time, it’s almost like Romans 12:1-2 comes to mind, just being a living sacrifice.”

“You present the Gospel. You know these things. But in response to that, it’s like your life becomes this living sacrifice,” he added.

One week after he questioned his entire career, Holmes was traded to New York.

He received the chance of a lifetime with highs and lows that came with being a Yankee, Holmes hung tight to Psalm 23 and felt complete peace.

“You get to the point where you see and He becomes your treasure,” Holmes said. “It’s no longer you seeking to kind of be your best because you feel like God’s blessed you with something and it’s like, ‘Oh, it’s on me to do this now.’

“You just realize that freedom of when you become that living sacrifice, there’s a freedom that comes with it that just allows you to display the talents and the uniqueness that God’s given you and the identity you have in Him in a way that’s much greater than you can do on your own.”

In Holmes first season with the Yankees in 2021, he posted a 1.61 ERA in 25 games, then in 2022 He posted a 2.54 ERA in 62 games where he also recorded 20 saves.

As he worked his way up Holmes received AL Reliever of the Month last May. He also made his first debut to the All-Star game last July.

Now, Holmes is the Yankees first choice closer. He recorded his first save of the season in a 4-2 win against the Phillies.
