Ariel, a beautiful mermaid, desperately wants to see what humans are like and is willing to do whatever it takes to find out in THE LITTLE MERMAID. HUGO - 9/1/2023

+1 Moderately questionable elements. (Discernment required for young children.)
HUGO follows the story of a young teenage boy who lives in the train station of Paris in 1930 and unlocks a secret that transforms his life and the crotchety godfather of his new friend, Isabelle. HUGO imaginatively presents the intelligent design argument for God and is filled with a childlike sense of wonder, adventure, and comedy and has an uplifting, redemptive ending, although there’s no mention of God other than iconography. Also, there are a few scary moments that require caution for younger children.

DRIVING MISS DAISY is a great character study with strong Christian values about a wealthy Jewish matron who’s befriended by her black chauffeur, a committed Christian full of wisdom. Beautifully acted by Jessica Tandy and Morgan Freeman and containing only two exclamatory curses, DRIVING MISS DAISY will not only fill you with joy and love, but also encourage you to follow Jesus Christ more closely.

DEFIANCE is the true story of three Jewish brothers during World War II who flee from Nazis into the Belarussian forest, where they build a community to protect other refugees. DEFIANCE has a very strong moral theme with positive references to God and faith, but caution needs to be exercised for the movie’s wartime violence, some foul language and implied unmarried sex.

DÉJÀ VU stars Denzel Washington as Doug Carlin, a top federal police official who uses a futuristic time travel device to stop an evil terrorist and try to prevent the death of 500 people, including a beautiful woman who could become the love of his life. DÉJÀ VU is an entertaining, stimulating, morally uplifting thriller with a very strong Christian worldview, but MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for older children because of some foul language, violence and brief rear female nudity shot in shadow.

OCTOBER SKY - 9/1/2023

Quality:

Content:
-1 Caution advised for older children, including teenagers, and sensitive adults.
Based on a true story, the movie tells how a West Virginia teenager named Homer in 1957 starts building home-made rockets with his friends so that they can eventually win a prize at the state science fair. Homer's father is the major obstacle the "rocket boys" face in their goal to escape the confined world of their mining hometown. The movie's pro-family, moral worldview is marred by more than 30 obscenities and one line of dialogue about teenage premarital sex that is not rebuked.

OF MICE AND MEN - 9/1/2023

Quality:
***
Content:
-1 Caution advised for older children, including teenagers, and sensitive adults.

OF MICE AND MEN is a new screen adaptation of John Steinbeck's timeless novel. The story deals with two manual laborers in California during the depression era of the 1930's and has its humorous as well as sad moments. OF MICE AND MEN is not a "feel good" movie--it is a tragedy, and the filmmakers make no attempt to modernize the story.

Quality:
****
Content:
-2 Extreme caution for older teenagers and adults.
ARRIVAL is a very well made, beautifully crafted science fiction movie about coming into contact with aliens who give humans the gift of a new language. Underneath ARRIVAL’s dubious science fiction propositions is a deeper, poignant story of death and grieving, but MOVIEGUIDE® advises strong caution for the movie’s false circular view of reality, which may confuse or sway viewers.

-2 Extreme caution for older teenagers and adults.
HACKSAW RIDGE is a great, emotive, powerful, touching Christian war movie about Desmond Doss (Andrew Garfield), a courageous conscientious objector who serves as an unarmed medic during the brutal battle of Okinawa in World War II. Brilliantly directed by Mel Gibson, HACKSAW RIDGE is a captivating, emotional movie about uncompromising faith and miraculous courage.
