Pierce Brosnan stars as Max Burdett, a veteran jewel thief. In the movie’s opening sequence, Max, with help from his attractive companion, Lola, played by Salma Hayek, steals the second of three so-called Napoleon diamonds. To steal the diamond, they humiliate FBI agent Stan Lloyd, played by Woody Harrelson.
Max and Lola retire to the Caribbean, but Lloyd soon follows them down there. Lloyd follows their every move, especially when the third Napoleon diamond shows up on display in a fully-loaded cruise ship. Lola tries to keep Max in retirement mode, but Max can’t resist the challenge of making a fool out of Lloyd again.
Pierce Brosnan plays the jewel thief with his usual Irish charm. Salma Hayek has her own charms as the seductive Latin beauty, and Woody Harrelson is funny as the put-upon FBI agent trying to turn the tables on his nemesis. There are a couple small twists at the end, but the thieves get away with their thievery. Director Brett Ratner directs this lively ensemble in a breezy, witty style.
Besides its immoral lesson on stealing, AFTER THE SUNSET also contains about thirty obscenities and profanities and several sensual scenes, with Salma Hayek appearing in bikinis and lingerie.
