Why This NCIS Character Couldn’t Shine Until Gibbs Left

Hardcore NCIS fans probably noticed that Special Agent Nick Torres didn’t really shine under Special Agent Leroy Gibbs’ leadership, but do you know why?

ScreenRant suggests that Gibbs’ and Torres’ styles were too similar for them to work together. “While Gibbs could relate to Torres, he didn’t push the young agent to work with the team as much as he could’ve. With both men keeping their guard up, Torres seemed stuck under Gibbs’ leadership, which pushed audiences away,” the outlet said.

Fans finally got a better picture of Torres in Season 18.

“We didn’t really know much, because Torres doesn’t really offer much about his personal life,” Wilmer Valderrama, who plays Torres, told TV Line about his character when he finally opened up about his past in Season 18, episode 12. “He doesn’t open the door on what journey he lived before he got to NCIS. His identity is a little mysterious, right? And that has been on purpose, by design.”

“But in this episode, we’re going to unravel way more than Torres is going to be comfortable with. You are really going to understand why Torres has that chip on his shoulder, and where he got this idea that he can just not be emotionally attached to anyone,” he continued. “You’re going to learn more about where he came from, what type of life he led when he was a kid… What’s exciting about this episode is it pulls back layers and layers of subtext that for years now the fans have been asking about.”

While Gibbs was still a part of the show when that episode aired, it served as the first look into Torres’ background even though he had joined the show in Season 14. However, since Gibbs’ exit, the show has explored more of Torres’ life, and the character has flourished under the new leadership of Alden Parker; fans know much more about him because his storyline no longer has to compete with Gibbs.

Valderrama does not appear to be leaving the show any time soon, but he has shared his plans for how he hopes his character goes out when the time finally comes.

“Like Denzel Washington in TRAINING DAY – just go out,” he said. “I think not being the bad guy [like Washington’s character], of course I’d like to die as a good guy. But defending my family somehow, just in a storm of bullets, I just see a storm of bullets just washing over me, just dying heroically with violins in the background and the rain is pouring.”

Until then, he will continue to serve as one of the backbones of NCIS — he’s been a part of the show now for nearly an entire decade. His next chapter, along with the rest of the show, will come soon as Season 23 kicks off on Oct. 14. The flagship show, along with NCIS: SYDNEY and NCIS: ORIGINS, will comprise CBS’s Tuesday night programming this fall.
