Country star Dierks Bentley shares his faith through his latest song, “Jesus Loves Me.”

“Tonight I’m dustin’ off the Bible // Stead’ of leanin’ on the bottle like I do,” he sang during a recent performance on GOOD MORNING AMERICA. “Yeah, Jesus loves me // but she don’t.”

During an interview with Whiskey Riff, Bentley spoke about how the song ended up on his new album, Broken Branches

“When I heard the song…again I tried to find some sort of theme to wrap the album around,” he said. “I found Broken Branches. I didn’t write that song…[but] that really became the theme. So this Jesus, small town, broken branches [and] leaving and searching, that spiritual component was really important.”

Bentley continued, “I wrote a song that didn’t make this record called ‘The Older I Get, The Longer I Pray.’ I think the older you get, the more gratitude you have for your blessings, and you recognize that every day is a gift. Getting some of that into the album, especially with this theme, was really important.”

The theme of “broken branches” was very important to Bentley as he put this album together.

“The idea of broken branches really resonated with me,” he told Country Living. “I had to create my own little family tree here in Nashville since most of my family is back in Arizona and scattered around. A lot of people who come here don’t have family close by, so we’re all kind of broken branches who create a new family tree of our own.”

The country star added, “The idea is that we’re all broken branches off of family trees, doing something a little different. Whether it was me, my friends, my bandmates, or anybody that moved to do music in any capacity, it’s probably something pretty different from what their family has done before. It’s me, it’s my friends, it’s who we all are.”

“I like the idea of broken branches and applied that idea to these songs, and the songs I was looking for,” he continued. “They were like broken branches too, not necessarily the ones that when you first hear them you know it’s a hit on country radio. Ones that have been orphaned a little bit or left lying around.”

Bentley’s album may be full of these “broken branch” songs, but for many of his fans, “Jesus Loves Me” is sure to be a hit!
