FOR KING + COUNTRY: A DRUMMER BOY CHRISTMAS – LIVE is a music concert produced and performed by Joel and Luke Smallbone. It brings the epic nature of Christmas to life as the 2024 Christmas season approaches. The powerful voices and lyrics of some of the band’s signature songs and favorite Christmas hymns make for a satisfying listen. The interpersonal moments where the leads interact with the audience and tell stories may be more powerful than the concert itself.

FOR KING + COUNTRY: A DRUMMER BOY CHRISTMAS – LIVE is an alternately generic and epic Christmas concert made into a movie. For fans of For King + Country, the concert will draw viewers in. But even if not someone’s preferred music style, the leads aim to communicate the epic nature of the Christmas story.

Constantly flashing lights could be difficult for some people, but the lights match the music well. The voices and charisma of the leads remain strong, but there is little new here. Hymns like “Joy to the World” are well sung, but some of the changes and improvisation on these may not be to everyone’s taste.

The original pieces and songs are crowd pleasers, including the “Unsung Hero,” which the band made famous in their recent movie of the same name. The quoting of Scripture in several parts is a nice touch. If one is looking for an uplifting Christmas concert in 2024, one won’t find a more biblically based one out of the typical offerings on the market this time of year.

The overall worldview of the movie is biblical Christianity. The focus on the true meaning of Christmas is refreshing. In a world inundated by the cult of Claus, it is good to see King + Country bring in such statements as the story of “the baby boy who won the war.” For, the heavenly hosts that show up to celebrate the birth of the King of Kings are the same beings that make up “the army of the Lord” led by a pre-Incarnate Christ who shows himself to Joshua, his namesake, just before the miraculous overthrow of Jericho.

It’s gratifying that the Smallbone boys convey the biblical view of Christmas as a central battle in the war against evil. They also drive home the idea that “God is not an abstract concept; God is here,” a critical and powerful point. FOR KING + COUNTRY: A DRUMMER BOY CHRISTMAS – LIVE has no objectionable content and is safe for all ages.
