“I’ve been hearing from so many fans of TOUCHED BY AN ANGEL that you are really enjoying having all seasons of our beloved series now on Netflix!” Roma Downey, who starred in the popular ’90s TV show, posted on Instagram.
She continued, “I have so many wonderful memories working with a terrific cast and crew. I loved playing the angel Monica and being able to deliver a message of hope every week to millions of people! God loves you.”

TOUCHED BY AN ANGEL premiered in 1994 and ran for nine seasons. The show followed an angel named Monica (Downey) who was tasked with guiding people on Earth, sharing messages from God and giving them encouragement.
“I think there was a hole in television programming that the show has managed to fill,” Downey told Irish America in a 1997 interview. “It’s a show that allows mothers to sit down with their children and not feel they have to keep their finger on the remote control.”
In an interview with Ability Magazine, she reflected on how she got the starring role.
“It was pilot season of ‘94, and I was reading through endless junk scripts that were being sent my way,” Downey recalled. “Typically the roles were to play his wife or his girlfriend — leading roles for women were few and far between.”
She remembered a “very unusual script” that came into her hands. It stood out to Downey “because I’m a person of faith, the spiritual aspects got my attention.”
Downey scored the role of Monica but admitted the show’s success with viewers wasn’t instantaneous. However, it soon found its footing.
“The show found a following from the middle of the country,” she explained. “While a lot of the more popular hits start on the coasts, in New York or L.A., I think you can trace our success to the Midwest and the South, the small towns and families. We had a very loyal following for many, many years.”
Martha Williamson, TOUCHED BY AN ANGEL’s head writer, spoke to Foster’s Daily Democrat about the show’s “trinity” message — “God exists; God loves you; God wants to be part of your life.”
“And at some point, you have decisions to make in your life because God gave you free will,” she added.
Now that TOUCHED BY AN ANGEL is available to stream on Netflix, a new generation of viewers will be introduced to the show’s timeless message of God’s love.
