Tim Allen will reunite with three of his former HOME IMPROVEMENT costars as they appear as special guests on Season 2 of SHIFTING GEARS.
“We did do another show for The History Channel called MORE POWER, which was a competition building show. We did that for two years and had a lot of fun. I am now getting ready to film an episode of Tim’s newest show SHIFTING GEARS,” Richard Karn, who played Al Borland on HOME IMPROVEMENT, told Women’s World.

Patricia Richardson and Debbe Dunning are also set to join Allen on Season 2 of the show. Though the season premiere is fast approaching – with the first episode releasing on Oct. 1 – ABC has kept the roles that Karn, Richardson and Dunning will play under wraps. The season’s plot has also been kept from the public, though star Kat Dennings previously shared some of her hopes for what the show would hold in the future.
“I hope we see Riley do some exploration of who she is now because she doesn’t really know who she is now without her ex-husband relationship and back living at home as a mom and two kids and have her discover her personality without the things that she is used to. I think that would be cool,” Dennings of her character said in March.
“I think the beauty of this is that I can conceive [multiple seasons of the show],” she later told Deadline. “[Riley] might end up there for five seasons or maybe in Season 3 she does move out. Who knows. [My brother on the show] is in the military and will come in hopefully in future seasons. And then there’s that whole dynamic with who he is. Where’s he going to live? So there could be just unlimited ways to go with this. I’m really looking forward to that.”
SHIFTING GEARS was one of the most popular new shows on television during its first season, and fans were thrilled when it was renewed for season two. The show is great for families to watch together because not only does it feature three generations, but those working on the show have also made sure to keep it family-friendly. A portion of Movieguide®’s review reads:
The pilot episode of SHIFTING GEARS teaches strong positive values. It stresses the importance of family, love, forgiveness, and reconciliation. Also, father uses an overt winsome reference to Jesus when discussing life with his teenage grandson. Despite their differences, the grandfather and his daughter still love each other and want the best for one another. They also bond over the loss of their wife/mom and remember her as a remarkable woman who kept the family together. However, the pilot episode of SHIFTING GEARS has some relatively light foul language and other issues. So, MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for older children.
It will be very fun to see Allen reunited with his former castmates. While it seems that they will not stick around on the show for long, perhaps they will continue to pop in and out in the future.
