What You Need To Know:
WHAT IF has quirky dialogue to show the quirky nature of the characters. The dialogue, however, sometimes seems forced. Also, some elements are heartwarming, but the storyline is drawn out. The main character stresses the importance of being committed to your partner, and marriage is seen as positive. Otherwise, however, WHAT IF has a Non-Christian, Romantic worldview where people base personal decisions on their emotions. WHAT IF also shows an unmarried couple living together, with lots of foul language and other crude dialogue. So, extreme caution is advised.

More Detail:
WHAT IF is a romantic comedy about a young man named Wallace, who’s at a low point in his life. He meets and has an instant connection with Chantry, but finds out she’s got a boyfriend. Despite solid moral elements exalting commitment and marriage, WHAT IF has a Non-Christian, Romantic worldview with too much crude dialogue.
Wallace dropped out of medical school and is at a low point in his life. He has not yet had a relationship that’s worked. When his friend, Allan, throws a party, he meets Chantry. He and Chantry talk almost the entire time, but then he finds out she has a boyfriend. Thinking there’s no point in being her friend, he throws out her number, but after running into her again, things change. Once again Chantry and Wallace hit it off and they become good friends because they have mutual interests. Their friendship blossoms, but, eventually, Wallace must meet Chantry’s boyfriend.
When Wallace goes to dinner at Chantry and Ben’s apartment, he accidently pushes Ben out the window. Ben is taken to the emergency room, and this naturally leaves a bad first impression, to say the least.
That same night, Wallace meets Chantry’s sister, Dalia, who takes interest in him. When Chantry finds out Dalia has an interest in Wallace, she gets defensive.
Not long after this, Ben tells Chantry that he is going to move to Dublin for a few months for his job. Wallace sees his best friend, Allan, getting married and wants this too with Chantry, but he’s respectful. When Chantry gets offered a promotion requiring her to move, she must decide if she should move and if she should choose Ben or Wallace.
WHAT IF is an independent movie trying to appeal to artsy young folks. The movie tries to have quirky dialogue to show the quirky nature of the characters, but the dialogue seems a little forced. Some elements are heartwarming, but the storyline is drawn out.
WHAT IF has a Romantic worldview. The main character does stress the importance of being committed to your partner, and marriage is seen as a positive goal and a desirable choice. Though this is the case, there’s always tension between Chantry dating, and living with, another person already and, ultimately, feelings win. Other cautionary elements include couple living together before marriage, a divorce, the two main characters spend a lot of time talking about feces, and lots of foul language and crude commentary. Consequently, MOVIEGUIDE® advises extreme caution for WHAT IF. Please don’t confuse this movie with the MOVIEGUIDE® Award winning movie starring Kevin Sorbo, WHAT IF. . .
