More Detail:
The first episode of the 12th season of WHEN CALLS THE HEART picks up right where we left off; Elizabeth and Nathan are exploring their new relationship and the challenges that come along with it, as Nathan is worried about measuring up to Elizabeth’s late husband, Jack. Meanwhile, Elizabeth is dealing with Little Jack growing up, as he’s starting school in her class. Rosemary and Leland are arguing over Lucas’ proposed park project, which will take Leland away from home for long periods of time.
The episode begins with a Mountie approaching Elizabeth and Nathan. He tells Elizabeth that a road crew was working near where her late husband, Jack, died in a landslide and found his medal. The Mountie gives Elizabeth the medal and tells Nathan that a recruit is being sent to Hope Valley for him to train.
Elsewhere, Lucas and Leland are planning their new national park. They’re both excited, but Lee’s wife, Rosemary, is apprehensive. She worries about Leland partnering with Lucas and how much time he would spend in Capital City, away from her and their daughter Goldie.
The first day of school arrives, and Little Jack worries about this new beginning. Elizabeth gives Jack the medal to reassure him, which he wears to school. Later, he passes the medal to Lily, who is also scared to start school. They walk into the schoolhouse together, and both enjoy their first day.
As Elizabeth and Nathan start to face the reality of being in a relationship, Nathan worries that Little Jack will ask questions about his father’s death—Nathan was supposed to lead the mission where Jack lost his life. Elizabeth reassures him of Little Jack’s love for him and tells him that when the time comes, they’ll tell Little Jack together.
Episode 1 of WHEN CALLS THE HEART’s twelfth season offers a terrific return to the series. It answers the lingering questions and cliffhangers from the Season 11 finale and introduces new stories and characters to be seen in upcoming episodes. Erin Krakow and Kevin McGarry have excellent chemistry, and longtime fans will be happy to see them finally together on screen.
