More Detail:

“Lost on Snow” is episode four of Bear Grylls’ new show YOU VS. WILD. Viewers are dropped alongside Grylls into the Swiss Alps’ snowy mountain terrain and tasked with surviving for 24 hours. Unlike other episodes, this adventure has no rescue component. Survival is the only goal. Can we make smart decisions in this survival situation? Another unique feature is that the first decision, a question of survival strategy, basically leads viewers audiences into two different episodes depending on the choice.

“Lost on Snow” has more survival teaching than other YOU VS. WILD episodes. This actually works well for the program, because viewers aren’t forced to pretend there’s a real person or animal needing rescue. They simply think through the problem, make their choices and let Grylls example the consequences. In this way, “Lost on Snow” is like a very expansive quiz show. Because there’s no rescue element, the show loses any selfless or sacrificial message, instead tilting totally towards a materialistic view of survival. “Lost on Snow” includes a dead and rotting animal, and Grylls demonstrates a lethal hunting trap. So, younger viewers might find this disturbing.
