MIRACLES FROM HEAVEN is a heartrending, faith-affirming drama about the true story of a 12-year-old girl, Anna Beam, suffering from a very serious medical disorder. Anna’s mother, Christy, recognizes her daughter has something serious wrong with her, but most doctors are confused by her disorder and treat her for other diseases. Finally, Anna’s parents find an expert in Boston, but his findings don’t bring much hope. In fact, things seem to be going from bad to worse. Anna convinces the doctor to let her return home, but an unexpected accident leaves Anna at death’s door.

MIRACLES FROM HEAVEN is a well-orchestrated, emotionally powerful movie, with strong jeopardy. The cast does a beautiful job adding humor and warmth to what could have been a hackneyed story. Opposition from some church members and an antagonistic atheist reporter add realism to the movie, which is based on a true story. MIRACLES FROM HEAVEN is an uplifting postcard from God. It may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but it tells a poignant, cinematic story of faith in Christ. MOVIEGUIDE® commends the filmmakers behind MIRACLES FROM HEAVEN.

More Detail:

MIRACLES FROM HEAVEN is a heartrending, faith-affirming drama about the true story of a 12-year-old girl suffering from a very serious medical disorder. The cast and the filmmakers do a beautiful job of making this true story come alive.

Anna’s mother, Christy, immediately recognizes her daughter has something serious wrong with her, but most of the doctors are confused by the disorder and treat her for other diseases. Finally, one doctor recommends an expert in the field at Boston Children’s Hospital, Dr. Nurko. Dr. Nurko, being the only expert in the field, has no time to see Anna, and Christy Beam, her mother, is desperate while her father, Kevin, is an overextended, understaffed, overworked veterinarian, who can barely keep his business going. When Christy can’t get hold of Dr. Nurko, she flies to Boston with Anna.

In Boston, the hospital receptionist tells them Dr. Nurko is booked for months, but Christy lays out all the medical problems facing Anna. A waitress at the hotel where they’re staying, Angela, realizes how serious Anna’s condition is and takes Anna and Christy on a fun-filled, laugh-filled tour of Boston in her broken down car. During the tour, Christy gets a phone call the doctor will see them the next morning.

When he sees Anna the next morning, Dr. Nurko realizes she’s worse off than he could possibly imagine. In fact, the tests don’t look good, and things are going from bad to worse. In the midst of all her pain, Anna witnesses to her roommate, who’s dying of cancer. However, the other girl’s father, who’s a tough atheist reporter with a Boston newspaper, demands that Anna’s mother never let Anna witness about Jesus to his daughter again.

Finally, Anna convinces Dr. Nurko she must go home. There, trying to play with her two sisters, Anna suddenly and unexpectedly falls into the hollow of a dead tree, 60 feet down…head first! The firemen pull her out, but her situation doesn’t look good.

MIRACLES FROM HEAVEN is a well-orchestrated movie, with strong jeopardy. Jennifer Garner adds compelling human warmth to the role of the mother. Queen Latifah does a beautiful job in a supporting role adding humor to a very serious medical issue. The opposition of some church members and the atheist reporter add realism to the story, which is a true story based on the book written by Anna’s mother, Christy.

MIRACLES FROM HEAVEN is an uplifting postcard from God. A story about one sick little girl may not be everybody’s cup of tea, but the filmmakers should be commended for making this true story both heartrending and entertaining.
