What You Need To Know:

IMMORTALS is a highly stylized, rousing sword and sandals, ancient-warrior epic set in a pagan universe of ancient Greek gods like Zeus. In the story, Theseus (“Thee-see-us”) competes with the evil King Hyperion to find a magical bow and arrow that can help whoever possesses it win any battle. After escaping captivity, Theseus forms a ragtag band of fellow prisoners. They find themselves in one exciting yet bloody battle sequence after another, climaxing with a final battle for the walls of a mountain fortress. This final battle takes place after a thrilling speech by Theseus.

IMMORTALS is exciting and visually stunning. The story is set in mythical Greek times, so there are references to Greek gods and other mythological beings and creatures. That said, the hero learns to take moral responsibility in his own life and as a leader of his people. Throughout the movie, mentors and gods inspire him to fight evil and stand up to do the right thing, no matter the cost to himself. This positive content, however, is marred by a gratuitous level of excessive R-rated violence and some sexual elements and brief nudity in one scene.

Content:

(PaPa, BB, VVV, S, NN, M) Strong pagan worldview in epic movie set in the world of ancient Greek gods including Zeus, offset by fairly strong moral values in which positive life principles are conveyed and acted out by the heroes despite the fact their concept of God is polytheistic and non-Christian; no foul language; extreme violence throughout the film, including dozens of sword stabbings, impalings, gouging, and several beheadings, plus man is tortured by an evil king by having a large man in a beastly horned costume slam a giant hammer into his testicles to destroy his chance at a bloodline, yet later he surprisingly is still alive, evil soldiers rampage through a village of good people, vandalizing and killing randomly with implied or discussed yet unseen sexual assaults on women as well, evil men and creatures are completely pulverized into a bloody mess in at least two scenes, the god Poseidon causes a massive tidal wave that slams a ship filled with evil soldiers into a rock wall but spares the heroes, evil king takes over a monastery and purposely mocks and degrades the holy men and relics within; implied fornication in shadow, implied sexual assaults on women by evil soldiers pillaging countryside, and discussion several times that the main hero was born out of wedlock after his mother was raped by enemies then labeled a “whore”; rear female nudity in one scene, upper male nudity, and four female oracles are dressed in somewhat revealing outfits, showing cleavage and lots of thigh; no alcohol use; no smoking; and, tyranny, revenge, and jealousy.

More Detail:

IMMORTALS is a highly stylized, rousing sword and sandals, ancient-warrior epic set in a pagan universe of ancient Greek gods like Zeus. Despite this polytheistic, non-Christian setting, it abounds with many strongly verbalized and then practiced moral lessons, such as taking on moral responsibility for the protection of your family and people, and of finding courage to do what is right even at the risk of death. The movie has very strong, excessive fighting violence, however, plus implied sex and brief nudity in one scene.

A humble man named Theseus is thrust into the middle of an epic war against the evil King Hyperion (Rourke) after his mother is slain before his eyes by the king’s evil forces. The movie then follows Theseus and Hyperion as they compete to find a magical bow and arrow that can help whoever possesses it win any battle.

Theseus forms a ragtag band of fellow prisoners as he escapes captivity and takes a female oracle under his care for protection from the evil forces. He and his company find themselves in one exciting yet bloody battle sequence after another, climaxing with a final battle for the walls of a mountain fortress. This final battle takes place after a thrilling, well-executed speech by Theseus that helps the movie transcend the mediocre writing in some mainstream action films these days.

IMMORTALS has a unique visual look. Its use of 3D effects is also vastly superior to most films employing the technique. It comes from the producers of “300,” which turned human characters into near-cartoons via striking visual effects, yet reigns in the effects here enough to keep everyone distinctly real amid all the stunning settings and battle footage. The only artistic downside of the movie on a quality level is that at some moments, it’s hard to follow the characters distinctively amid all the mayhem.

Of course, the story is set in mythical Greek times, so there are references to Greek gods and other mythological beings and creatures. The best part is the character arch that the hero undergoes. The hero learns to take moral responsibility in his own life and as a leader of his people. Throughout the movie, mentors and gods speak to him. They inspire him to boldly fight evil and stand up for what is right, no matter the cost to himself. This culminates in a rousing speech in the tradition of classic films like SPARTACUS and BRAVEHEART as he rallies his forces to fight evil at all costs before the final battle.

This positive content, however, is marred by excessive violence and some sexual elements and brief nudity in one scene. Thus, the movie gets an R rating from the Hollywood establishment and a Minus 3 from MOVIEGUIDE®. Because of this gratuitous content, IMMORTALS will have an unnecessarily tough time competing with this holiday season’s family movies.
