What You Need To Know:
THINK LIKE A MAN presents the pagan lifestyle of its characters as fashionable, fun, and lacking in commitment. To its credit, the movie moves in the direction of commitment, but it is too little, too late. Like the TV show FRIENDS, THINK LIKE A MAN promotes a lifestyle that looks fun but leads to 90 percent unwed birth rates, poverty, and crime. Movieguide® recommends you avoid THINK LIKE A MAN and focus more on thinking like Jesus instead.

(PaPa, B, C, LLL, SSS, N, AA, DD, MMM) A largely pagan worldview where men and women seek happiness by pursuing pleasure but they do discover a measure of commitment is preferable to absolute promiscuity and there are light, but undeveloped references to Jesus; 106 obscenities, 12 profanities, use of the “n” word, and talk about male and female genitals; no violence; repeated acts of implied or lightly depicted fornication among several couples and frequent discussion of sex; upper male nudity and skimpy female outfits, including during bedroom scenes; repeated alcohol use but without obvious drunkenness; mention of drug use but no on screen drug use; and, extreme miscellaneous immorality includes valet briefly steals a fancy car to impress a rich girl (he gets fired), dishonesty, deceit, and horrendous role models with some improvement in behavior at the conclusion.

THINK LIKE A MAN is a comedy about a group of vulgar, under-motivated black men who hang out, play basketball, drink beer, watch sports, and discuss the cheap sex available with women they have no intention to marry.
The women in their lives see Steve Harvey selling his book “Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man.” Harvey’s book provides tips to women on how to get what they want from men by “thinking like a man.” The women try out his techniques to great success until the men discover the women’s copies of the book and realize how they are being played. The tables turn back and forth with the end result being favorable to both the men and women, but the path getting there is absolutely loaded with vulgarity, fornication, dishonesty, and deceit.
The lifestyle of the vulgar, promiscuous “friends” is presented as fashionable, fun, and lacking in commitment. To its credit, the movie moves in the direction of commitment, but it’s too little, too late. The movie opens with a joke about how women have become too quick to give men sex and contains recurring jokes about how women can’t survive 90 days without having sex with some available man.
The television shows FRIENDS and SEINFELD popularized the idea of young, hip adults “hanging out” discussing sexual desires and experiences, among other things. THINK LIKE A MAN takes this to lower levels. Sex is discussed by both the men and women as the equivalent of eating a “cookie.”
There is no humor in what’s been happening to black inner-city culture. How young, inner city blacks think is of tremendous significance. The unwed birth rate for young black women in inner cities is above 90 percent.
Black women are not being treated with the respect God would have them be given. Granted, their behavior may be part of the reason they get so little respect, but THINK LIKE A MAN doesn’t help. Even with its pro-commitment conclusion, it’s just too full of promiscuity and promiscuous thinking. It even contains a joke about the Old Testament encouraging dishonesty.
An undertone to the movie is that the male and female participants in this fornication dance know something about Jesus. There are even comic references to coming home to “Jesus.”
Christianity is about much more than just Christians being critical of immoral behavior. It’s about thinking like Jesus. Remember, Jesus did not stone the woman caught in adultery. He forgave her, but sent her away with the admonition not to continue in a life of sin.
What the characters in this movie, and all mankind, truly need is to be able to think like Jesus. Jesus went to the cross and gave his life because He so loved sinners. What He has to offer blacks, whites, and everyone else is vastly superior to beers, jokes, and “cookies.” What He offers makes for healthy marriages, happy children, and a delightfully civil society.
The goal of Christians must not be to throw stones at those who live like the characters in this movie, but to demonstrate the greater happiness available in being led by the Spirit of God. Just imagine what America’s cities could be like if residents truly desired to think like Jesus. Addictions would be cured, poverty would diminish, prisons would empty, and children would be loved by their mothers and fathers.
Movies can help point society in that direction. THINK LIKE A MAN does not.
