Texas Christian University (TCU) quarterback Josh Hoover recently joined the Sports Spectrum “What’s Up” Podcast, where he discussed his experience on the sidelines before earning the QB1 spot.
“I literally thought every week was going to be my week, you know, I was like, I’m gonna do everything I can to be ready this week,” Hoover said of working hard to earn the starting spot. “If they decided to put me in, I’m gonna be ready, and I’m never going to come out again. You know, that was my mentality. Like, I was pretty focused on just controlling what I can control and doing what I can do on my part and be ready for the team.”
But he realizes that time on the sideline taught him an important life lesson.

“For people in situations where you’re kind of stuck, you have to think about the other things. It’s not just about football,” he explained. “It’s about, are you going to graduate? Are you around the right people? Are you making an impact on people for the Lord? You know, because that’s ultimately, that’s the most important thing. What kind of impact are you making on people?
“So I think there’s a lot, a lot of things to consider, and it’s never easy,” he added. “Definitely something to pray about and ask God to lead you in a certain direction in times of controversy, you know. You just pray and seek God’s face, and He’ll direct you left or right.”

Luckily, Hoover knows that through the Lord, the fight has already been won.
“Jesus already won the battle. He’s already died on the cross and forgiven us of our sins, and He’s given us an opportunity to have eternal life with Him,” Hoover shared. “And so when you play from that perspective, you know you’re free. You’re able to be free and just have freedom and go play and have fun and understand that the battle has already been won.”
Due to his outstanding play, Hoover was recently asked if he would ever transfer from TCU.
“I love TCU, I love Fort Worth. This is my family here. TCU is a top-caliber program in my eyes, so I don’t know why I would leave to go to another program when I’m already at one,” the athlete said.
In the opening weekend of college football last month, Hoover delivered a strong performance, “throwing for 284 yards and two touchdowns in a 48–14 rout of North Carolina,” per Sports Spectrum.
Hoover continues to trust in the Lord as he leads the Horned Frogs this season.
