One moment while filming SHIFTING GEARS Season 2 left actor Seann William Scott “starstruck”: the HOME IMPROVEMENT reunion.

Scott revealed that he didn’t end up reading the parts of the script that included the HOME IMPROVEMENT reunion because he wanted to focus on his scenes.

But, when he saw the cast on set, he was shocked.

“I was starstruck, to be honest. I remember watching the show when I was younger. It was really exciting. And then I was like, ‘Oh, maybe I should read the full script from now on,’” he laughed as he talked with TV Insider.

Tim Allen teased the reunion last month on Instagram.

“Hey, what are you doing? Wrong set!” Allen yelled to his former costars Patricia Richardson, Debbe Dunning and Richard Karn as they attempted to enter their old studio for HOME IMPROVEMENT in a fun TikTok. “SHIFTING GEARS, it’s over here. Come on, keep it moving, people. Let’s go. Come on. Ok. Keep it moving.”

The trio are all members of a grief group that Allen’s character Matt attends following his wife’s death.

“It was hysterically funny just getting them to be these completely different characters and you end up slipping back into your old roles you played,” Allen said. “Mostly it was just for fun for the audience.”

Scott, meanwhile, loves figuring out his character, Gabriel, Riley’s childhood best friend/crush.

“I don’t know if I would call it a growth,” he told TV Insider of his character arc this season. “I remember talking with [writer] Michelle Nader about the character, and I said, ‘I don’t do smart characters well…I think I’m better at playing characters that aren’t as bright.’ And so, they put me in situations where you can see more of that. What they have written for me is so fun, and there is a lot of different, weird stuff that they have me saying and doing. I think people are really going to enjoy it.”

Ultimately, Scott is excited for fans to see him in his first sitcom.

“What I’ve noticed in the second season, which I think happens sometimes…I love the first season. I’m obviously super biased, just the jokes, the writing, and I find the writing to be so funny — it seems kind of elevated compared to the first season,” he explained. “I’m sure, a lot of it, having the luxury of the writers figuring out what you know, how to write for each actor, and what seems to be working.”

“I think that was a long answer to your question, but it’s the comedy,” he added. “I think it’s much funnier, and it’s pushing the envelope in a lot of different ways. Also, I think even the first episode, the reunion of Tim with all the cast from HOME IMPROVEMENT, and also with Nancy from LAST MAN STANDING. That was a lot of fun.”

Episode 1 of Season 2 is now streaming on Hulu. New episodes of SHIFTING GEARS air on Wednesdays at 8/7c.
