After over three decades of creating sitcoms, Tim Allen’s latest show, SHIFTING GEARS, and its success prove he’s still got it.
“You don’t know what’s going to happen. I feel like I’m in an antique’s show because I’m on linear TV, remember that? A live studio audience,” Allen told Entertainment Tonight of making sitcoms today. “It’s all of us vintage guys on SHIFTING GEARS staring at the crowd saying it’s unbelievable, it’s like a theater play. My daughter’s age, they’re all swiping on Instagram, but I brought them to see it. Ratings have been stellar, so who knows.”
In a separate interview with ET, the 71-year-old actor explained that with each new sitcom, things keep getting better.
“I didn’t think I could top HOME IMPROVEMENT,” he said of the hit ’90s show. “LAST MAN STANDING was just a great family…I loved everything about it.”
When producers asked Allen what kind of series he wanted to do next, he had a few ideas in mind.
“They said, if I did it, what would I do?” he recalled. “So, if I could do it about grief, like me, a single guy, and have a contentious relationship with my kids, living by myself because my wife passed, and deal with cars. I dealt with outdoor stuff. I dealt with the construction stuff that I love, and I got cars.”
And that’s basically what SHIFTING GEARS is all about.
Allen loves classic cars, both on the screen and off. He currently has a warehouse for his car collection, which includes a Volvo P1800, Chevy 409 Bubble Top, Ferrari 330 GTC, Pontiac GTO Ram Air 4, Shelby Cobra, Shelby GT350H, Jaguar E-Type, 1972 Ford Bronco and many others.
SHIFTING GEARS Season 2 is on its way, which Allen announced on his Instagram. Fans celebrated in the comment section. “Awesome! I’ve really been enjoying this show!” one fan wrote. Another person added, “This show is hilarious.”
Movieguide® praised SHIFTING GEARS’ “Strong moral, redemptive worldview.”
Part of the review reads:
SHIFTING GEARS is an entertaining family comedy on ABC starring Tim Allen as Matt and Kat Dennings as Riley. Though Matt and Riley have a strained father-daughter relationship, they must support each other and reconcile their differences when Riley moves back home with her father as her life falls apart. Her two children add to the chaos and reveal just how different Matt and Riley are. The pilot episode, titled “Restoration,” introduces the family dynamics and the two main employees at Matt’s shop.
Movieguide® notes that there is some light language in the show, but the show exhibits the bond of a family.
The release date for season 2 of SHIFTING GEARS has not yet been announced, but it will come out later this year.
