HOUSE OF DAVID’s writer, director and executive producer Jon Gunn opened up about bringing the Biblical story to streaming — and why it’s resonated with so many people.

“I think, first and foremost, it’s just a great story,” Jon Gunn told Movieguide®. “In many ways, this is the origin of the Hero’s Journey. The idea of being plucked from obscurity and having some incredible destiny to pursue — I think there’s a wish-fulfillment to that that we all want to believe.”

HOUSE OF DAVID tells the story of the rise of David as he takes on Goliath — and starts on his path to the throne.

“It’s a story that people are familiar with…but not a lot of people know the details of that story, so I think it has this great familiarity to it, [and] there’s a comfort to that, but also mystery, because there’s so many details of it that people don’t know,” Gunn explained. “I think the combination of all that, plus the fact that it’s epic…it kind of gives something for everyone.”

The writer-director also reflected on what it’s been like to balance biblical accuracy with compelling storytelling, calling it a “great challenge” as well as “a gift, because you’re starting with a framework of a story that’s laid out.”

“We’re looking to the Bible and to the scripture all the time…but then there’s all these gaps in between,” Gunn said. “It gives us an opportunity to create a lot around it.”

In an interview with Variety, Gunn teased Season 2 of HOUSE OF DAVID, sharing, “We pick up literally the very second we leave off from Season 1. The first episode of Season 2 will be in the entirety of that battle.”

“We have a couple of new characters joining the family in Season 2, too, so that’s exciting,” he added.

In the same interview, executive producer and director Jon Erwin teased potential future seasons, saying, “I’ve plotted out the entire series. This is something that I’ve been dreaming of for decades. I very clearly know where I want this series to end.”

In the meantime, fans of the series can watch HOUSE OF DAVID on Amazon Prime through a new subscription partnership the show’s production company, Wonder Projects, recently struck with the streamer.

“The dream of the Wonder Project subscription on Prime Video is to make it easier than ever for families to decide what to watch together,” Erwin, the company’s founder said in a statement. “We are so excited to kick things off with the two-episode premiere of HOUSE OF DAVID’s second season. The reaction to the show has been extraordinary. The new season is epic and emotional and I can’t wait for Wonder subscribers to be the first to experience it.”

Season 2 of HOUSE OF DAVID premiered on Prime Video on Oct. 5!
