THE SUPER MARIO GALAXY MOVIE is now available to watch on digital platforms.

The animated movie was a hit at the global box office. It’s made a little under $1 billion worldwide since its April 1 release and is the biggest movie of the year thus far. It came to premium video on demand this week, on May 19, Polygon reported.

The movie follows Mario and Luigi as they encounter Bowser Jr., who wants to avenge his father, King Bowser, and attempts to kidnap the long-lost princess Rosalina. But it’s not just her life and powers at risk — it’s the whole galaxy.

Part of Movieguide®’s +1 review of the Nintendo animated adventure reads, “THE SUPER MARIO GALAXY MOVIE is a funny, eye-popping series of rousing set pieces. It has an amazing variety of colorful, fantastic sets and characters. There’s some intense action violence, scary moments and scary creatures, however.”

“THE SUPER MARIO GALAXY MOVIE has a strong moral worldview with some redemptive content,” it continues. “It stresses good overcoming evil, helping others and doing the right thing. The movie also promotes strong bonds between sisters and brothers.”

The home release also includes bonus material with interviews from the cast and filmmakers. Composer Brian Tyler shares how he turned video game music into a cinematic score, and the filmmakers dive into the movie’s easter eggs.

On PVOD, the movie costs $24.99 to rent and $29.99 to purchase, which includes the bonus content. Prime Video currently has an offer for both the first and second SUPER MARIO movies for $39.99, IGN reported.

Blu-ray and 4k Ultra HD editions will release on June 16.  The movie will also get a limited edition 4K steelbook in the style of Rosalina’s Storybook. It will likely stream first on NBCUniversal’s Peacock service in August.

THE SUPER MARIO GALAXY MOVIE set up the ending to lead to another movie, so there will likely be a third movie out in the next few years.

Total Film reported the movie is full of easter eggs and throwbacks, and fans keep noticing new ones. For instance, the prison holding Bowser and Bowser Jr. is made to look like a stack of old Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) cartridges. In another scene, Bowser sings a melody that’s one of the very first Bowser boss theme melodies.

Though the movie has had worldwide success, its Rotten Tomatoes critics review score is pretty low at 42%. The audience score is more than double though, at 88%.
