PROJECT HAIL MARY has struck a chord with viewers across the board — for good reason.

Spoiler Alert — the following reveals PROJECT HAIL MARY’s plot.

GROWING PAINS star Kirk Cameron drew a significant comparison between PROJECT HAIL MARY and the story of Jesus Christ in a recent podcast.

“Imagine watching the sun slowly fade in the sky. Crops are failing. Oceans are freezing,” Cameron said of the movie’s plot. “And humanity is counting down its final days.”

“Now, imagine there’s only one hope. One man on a one-way mission into the darkness of outer space, knowing that he will probably never come back alive. And then imagine that he discovers that he can save billions of strangers, but only if he sacrifices himself for a friend,” he explained.

This echoes the greatest story in the world — Jesus’ sacrifice to save everyone in the world from their sin.

“That’s the plot and the emotional impact behind PROJECT HAIL MARY,” Cameron continued. “Because 2,000 years ago, someone else left home on a rescue mission. not to save one civilization, but to save all humanity, and his name was Jesus Christ… This movie is resonating in the hearts of people, and there’s a reason stories of sacrifice move us so deeply.”

Cameron said people instinctively recognize that sacrifice is the deepest form of love. It’s a no-brainer why the movie’s message and the gospel message move people so profoundly.

“I believe the human heart was designed by God to recognize the gospel when we see it,” Cameron said. “Now, I’m not saying that PROJECT HAIL MARY is about the gospel, but every great story that reverberates within the human heart whispers the same truth: We need saving. We cannot save ourselves.”

PROJECT HAIL MARY Christopher Miller and Phil Lord talked with Movieguide® about the movie’s message.

“Saving the planet is abstract,” Lord explained. “You know, like when Superman saves the planet. When Superman saves Lois Lane, like you’re like, ‘Oh, he better hurry.’

“And so that’s kind of what we wanted to think about, like you need to save one person. And who is his person? You’re talking about a lonely guy, who doesn’t quite fit in on Earth and finally finds somebody that he’s willing to sacrifice for.”

Movieguide® gave PROJECT HAIL MARY a -1 rating.

Part of the review reads, “PROJECT HAIL MARY is a terrific space adventure with lots of humor and heart. It’s a thoroughly uplifting movie with little objectionable content such as two minor references to evolution. Those mentions are counterbalanced by the movie’s Christian title and a lovely reference to God and faith midway in the story, which set the tone for PROJECT HAIL MARY’s exhilarating finish.”

PROJECT HAIL MARY came out on March 20. It’s still playing in many theaters in the US.
