Ryan Gosling says sacrifices are “easy” to make once you become a parent.
“I think once you have kids, it’s like, those are easy,” he told PEOPLE at a premiere event for his latest movie, PROJECT HAIL MARY. “It’s an easy call to make.”
The actor drew parallels between himself and his character, saying it’s “much more of an existential crisis,” rather than a decision he makes for others.
“I think that’s what’s so relatable about his journey, is that he just doesn’t — you know, he has to learn to believe in himself, and he’s put into this situation that forces him to find what’s in there that he didn’t know was there,” Gosling finished. “And I think we all have that in us.”
In PROJECT HAIL MARY, Gosling plays science teacher Ryland Grace, who “wakes up alone on a spaceship light-years from Earth,” per a synopsis from IMDb. “As his memory returns, he uncovers a mission to stop a mysterious substance killing the sun, and save Earth. An unexpected friendship may be the key.”
In addition to Gosling, the movie also stars Sandra Hüller, James Ortiz, Lionel Boyce, Milana Vayntrub, Ken Leung and Priya Kansara.
PROJECT HAIL MARY just hit theaters and is already a huge success with moviegoers — the movie has already made $80.6 million at the domestic box office, which The Hollywood Reporter noted is “the best showing of the year so far, in addition to setting a new best for Amazon Studios.”
The movie has also made $60.4 million overseas for a worldwide launch of $141 million.
“Openings like this is what makes this business special. You could feel how big this film was going to be with the rave reviews from the early screenings and massive presales. Congrats to everyone to who was involved in making this film,” Kevin Wilson, Amazon MGM domestic distribution chief, said. “And it leaves no doubt that Ryan Gosling is a singular star that has the massive global appeal and charisma to anchor a story like this.”
Movieguide®’s review of PROJECT HAIL MARY calls it an “excellent science fiction thriller,” adding that it is “a terrific space adventure with lots of humor and heart. It’s a thoroughly uplifting movie with little objectionable content.”
PROJECT HAIL MARY’s uplifting story is already winning over audiences and critics and is on track to be one of the highest-earning movies of the year.
