1984 marked the only time the US Men’s Gymnastics team won Olympic gold. Now, 42 years later, that team’s story will be retold in a new documentary, ’84: THE SUMMER OF GOLD.

The documentary, directed by Nick Nanton, will release in the summer of 2028, the same time Los Angeles will host the 2028 Olympic Games.

“’84: THE SUMMER OF GOLD captures the story of a team that rose from the ashes of a stolen dream to reclaim their destiny,” a statement about the documentary read, per Deadline. “Their journey began in the shadow of the 1980 Moscow Games boycott, a political maneuver that dashed the Olympic hopes of an entire generation. Four years later, these American athletes stepped onto the world stage in Los Angeles to fight for their dreams and the honor of their country, as the US and Soviet Union remained locked in conflict, with Russia retaliating with their own boycott.”

“For the first time in forty years, a documentary feature film plunges audiences into the high-stakes furnace of the 1984 Games through never-before-seen photos, footage and interviews reminiscing back on that unique time in U.S. and sports history,” the statement continued. “This is a visceral, front-row seat to an athletic revolution, weaving intimate legendary testimony with a vault of Olympic archival discovery that reveals the raw, human heart of the arena and the definitive account of a bond that transformed global tension in the most profound ways.”

Nanton is grateful to bring the story and its cultural impact to audiences.

“This is more than a sports story, it’s a moment in history where perseverance, politics, and Olympic pride collided,” he said in a statement. “After missing their chance in 1980, this team carried the weight of a nation into Los Angeles and achieved something no American men’s gymnastics team has done before or since. As we return to LA for the 2028 Games, it feels meaningful and important to revive this team’s story as a reminder to those who watched it, and as an inspiration to a generation that didn’t.”

The documentary will feature gold medalist team members Bart Conner, Peter Vidmar, Mitch Gaylord, Tim Daggett and Scott Johnson.

“This team wasn’t just competing for a medal,” Conner said of the team’s experience in 1984. “We were carrying four years of heartbreak, sacrifice, and unfinished dreams into Los Angeles. What we accomplished together still feels surreal, and I’m grateful this film will capture not just the victory, but the journey and brotherhood that made it possible.”

’84: THE SUMMER OF GOLD will be an exciting look back the historic win for US Men’s Gymnastics.
