More Detail:
The movie opens with Rosalina starting to read a bedtime story to the Lumas, a race of mysterious baby star creatures who have adopted Rosalina as their mother. Rosalina doesn’t get very far when Bowser Junior arrives and kidnaps her and a baby yellow star after a brief fight. The kidnapping is part of a plan to free his father from the small palace that Mario and Luigi have built to imprison a shrunken King Bowser.
Cut to Mario and his younger brother, Luigi, racing their motorcycles across a desert. They arrive at a small desert town to investigate scary noises coming from some pipes in a dark cave. They use their fire power to light the way past some scary bats. When they get to the pipes, they find a small lost and friendly dinosaur, who calls himself Yoshi. They take Yoshi with them back to the Mushroom Kingdom.
In the Mushroom Kingdom, Mario struggles to find a birthday present for Princess Peach. Peach tells Mario she doesn’t really know about her birthday. All she remembers is being with her sister Rosalina and creating green spaces with flowers by using their cosmic powers of stardust. The toad people of the Mushroom Kingdom welcomed her and made her Princess. Mario gives Peach an umbrella for her birthday.
The baby yellow star escapes the clutches of Bowser Junior. It flies to the Mushroom Kingdom to alert Princess Peach. Peach and her advisor, Toad, leave the Kingdom with the baby yellow star. Peach orders Mario and Luigi to take care of the Mushroom Kingdom while she’s gone.
With Princess Peach gone, the imprisoned Bowser tries to convince Mario he’s changed for the better, but Mario is skeptical. Especially since Bowser keeps flying into a rage when he doesn’t get his way, then having to apologize.
Bowser Junior arrives at the Mushroom Kingdom and uproots the palace with Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, and his father in it. He takes them with him in his spaceship. When they finally join Princess Peach and Toad in Junior’s own palace, they discover that Junior has a machine designed to steal Rosalina’s cosmic powers to arm a huge weapon.
Can Mario, Princess Peach and company save Rosalina and stop Bowser Junior from destroying the universe? In a funny, but heartbreaking subplot, can Bowser avoid his son’s hero worship (or villain wordship) to resist the evil within him?
THE SUPER MARIO GALAXY MOVIE is a funny, eye-popping series of rousing set pieces as the heroes struggle to overcome multiple obstacles and race to save Princess Peach’s sister and stop Bowser Junior. The movie has an amazing variety of colorful, fantastic sets and characters. There’s some intense action violence, scary moments and scary creatures, however. We advise readers and parents, therefore, to examine MOVIEGUIDE®’s list of such items in the CONTENT section for this movie.
THE SUPER MARIO GALAXY MOVIE has a strong moral worldview with some redemptive content. It stresses good overcoming evil, helping others and doing the right thing. Also, two brothers and two sisters have a close bond with their siblings. Luigi and eventually Mario express love for their enemies but will their enemies ever really repent remains an open question throughout the movie. In that light, Mario in one scene deliberately saves Bowser Junior from a dragon despite all the bad things he and his father have done. Finally, SUPER MARIO GALAXY includes a line about “meeting your maker.” However, in another scene, a heroic character says “the universe” will not forgive a villain for his evil deeds. This statement reflects a false theology that smacks of pantheism and thus contradicts the other line.
MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution younger and older pre-teen children because of the intense action violence and scary parts in THE SUPER MARIO GALAXY MOVIE.
