Even though THE SUPER MARIO GALAXY MOVIE does not come out until April 1, the movie has already set a Guinness World record with the release of the world’s smallest popcorn bucket.

“The miniature cauldron represents the latest example of the growing role of theatrical collectibles in creating immersive cinema experiences, giving audiences a unique way to celebrate the worlds and characters they love long after the credits toll,” Illumination, Nintendo and Universal Products & Experiences said in a joint statement.

The tiny popcorn holder fits in perfectly with the movie. It mirrors the cauldron owned by Bowser in the movie who now lives in a miniaturized castle after eating a mini mushroom at the end of the first movie. The mini popcorn holder, which can hold roughly five to 11 pieces of popcorn, will be sold at participating theaters including AMC and Cinemark. Yoshi- and Luma-themed popcorn buckets will also be sold in a regular size.

THE SUPER MARIO GALAXY MOVIE is a direct sequel to 2023’s THE SUPER MARIO BROS. MOVIE and is expected to build on its predecessor’s success. The first movie grossed over $1.3 billion at the global box office and ended as the No. 2 movie of the year behind BARBIE. The first movie captured such a large audience because of its family-friendly values that fit right in to the iconic franchise. A portion of Movieguide®’s review reads:

THE SUPER MARIO BROS. MOVIE (2023) has a strong moral message about brotherhood, sacrifice, and working together to overcome evil. The movie has breathtaking animation that honors its iconic source material while breathing new life into the large cast of characters from both Mario video games and other Nintendo games of the same universe. For Mario and Luigi, love for one another helps them overcome their deepest fears and stand up against Bowser and his army of Koopas, Goombas, and Piranha Plants. Due to some intense animated action/violence, Movieguide® advises caution for younger children.

While the first movie stayed in the Mario universe, the sequel has hinted at including other iconic Nintendo franchises, such as Pikmin. This could potentially set up a massive universe that crosses over into an epic story.

“It really stems back to 20 years ago when we did a presentation where it starts off with, there’s a Pikmin next to you,” said Nintendo’s VIP, Shigeru Miyamoto. “In Nintendo there’s sort of like an unwritten rule. Mario needs to stay in the Mario universe, or Splatoon needs to stay in Splatoon, and we don’t use different characters in the same place. But Pikmin has this kind of unwritten rule where they’re okay to appear with other characters.”

THE SUPER MARIO GALAXY MOVIE hits theaters April 1.
