FAT GIRL

What You Need To Know:

In the French movie FAT GIRL, a 15-year-old girl, Elena, has an affair with a third-year law student from Italy, Fernando, while her family is on holiday. She sneaks the man into her bedroom for sexual liaisons while her younger sister, Anaïs, an overweight girl who compulsively overeats out of boredom and depression, lies awake in her bed. The two sisters have a love-hate relationship because Elena is pretty and tries to boss Anaïs, yet Anaïs at times seems to get a vicarious thrill sharing the secrets of Elena’s affairs and loose morals. Tragedy and fate intercedes, as often happens in French dramas like FAT GIRL.

The feminist, pagan worldview of FAT GIRL sympathizes with the plight of its young female leads. Fernando clearly takes advantage of Elena, but Elena herself seems ready to mistake sex and lust for love. Although there is not much talk of fate, the tragedy that befalls these characters seems to be in line with the French cinematic tradition of fateful tragedies. The male species seems to be the focus of the director’s attack, but this is an abhorrent worldview, as is this movie’s lewd sex acts and graphic nudity.

Content:
