Is it true no one fights like Gaston? Douses lights like Gaston? Now we’ll find out. Disney just announced a live-action feature based on Gaston from BEAUTY AND THE BEAST.

“The studio is developing GASTON, a feature based on the story’s villain character,” The Hollywood Reporter announced, adding, “Plot details have not yet been disclosed for the movie that is still in early stages.”

While nothing is known about the project’s plot, Deadline reported a source told them it will be “a new and original version” of the character’s story, “with a new actor” and a “swashbuckling” story.

Dave Callaham wrote the most recent draft of the project. His previous credits include SHANG-CHI AND THE LEGEND OF THE TEN RINGS and SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE. STAR WARS producer Michelle Rejwan is set to produce.

Gaston was voiced by Richard White in 1991’s BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, while Luke Evans played the villain in the 2017 live-action version of the popular story.

This isn’t the only live-action adaptation in the works. Disney recently revived plans to make a live-action version of the popular Rapunzel retelling TANGLED. It’s been reported that STRANGER THINGS’ Sadie Sink and McKenna Grace, who will appear in the upcoming HUNGER GAMES prequel SUNRISE ON THE REAPING, are both being considered for the role of Rapunzel.

A live-action version of HERCULES has also been in development, with AVENGERS writer-directors the Russo Brothers at the helm. The most recent update on this project came from the Russos, who said they are still “waiting on a script.”

A live-action version of MOANA is also set to hit theaters next summer, with Catherine Laga’aia playing the titular role and Dwayne Johnson reprising his role as Maui.

Dana Ledoux Miller, one of the movie’s co-writers, told Variety the new version of MOANA will honor the animated original, while putting a fresh spin on the story through the new actors.

“[Laga’aia is] incredible,” she said. “She had no problem going head-to-head with Dwayne. She wasn’t intimidated at all.”

Miller continued, “There’s a 16-year-old girl who is on the open water embarking on a dangerous journey. The visceral nature of that really comes through with live action. It gives the movie a real human vulnerability that will make it feel fresh.”

Whether it’s retellings of beloved animated movies, or a new story about a familiar character, it looks like Disney has a lot of fun projects on the way!
