More Detail:

Compiled of fourteen animated shorts, the 24TH INTERNATIONAL TOURNEE OF ANIMATION is a visual feast. Sometimes profound, sometimes crude, it is a melange of styles and content which is definitely not for children. “The Sandman,” a British Academy Award nominee, is a brilliantly conceived but terrifying fairy tale that deals with a child’s primal fear of the dark. Like most of the shorts in this anthology, it presents a bleak, twisted view of life. “Prehistoric Beast” is frightening tale about a small dinosaur being hunted by a ferocious T-Rex. Phil Tippett, the dinosaur master for JURASSIC PARK, is the creator of this short. A major portion of the movie is taken up by a twenty-one minute salute to Will Vinton’s claymation artistry. Only the cute “Little Wolf,” the story of a misbegotten wolf who gets hung up on the moon, is suitable for children.

Although THE 24TH INTERNATIONAL TOURNEE OF ANIMATION brims with artistic and technical brilliance, it breaks little new ground in terms of animation technique; but the film does contain highly creative and disturbing images of humanity. With all these bleak looks at the macabre and dysfunctional side of life, maybe there should be a “Tournee for Children” made up of fun, light-hearted, lyrical shorts designed to teach and delight children.
