Phil Wickham took fans behind the scenes of DAVID, from voicing the titular character to attending the movie’s premiere.
“I cannot believe I’m a part of this project,” the singer said in a recent video diary. “The animation I’ve seen so far is incredible. Like, Disney-Pixar level. The songs are beautiful.”
The video contains clips of Wickham recording his lines, as well as vocals for DAVID’s songs.
“[I] can’t wait to see videos of kids running around their living room singing these songs,” he said, adding, “I feel so blessed. There’s worship in [DAVID]. There’s God in it. There’s faith in it. I think the net is going to be cast so giant for people to be exposed to who God really is, and I’m very humbled to be a part of it.”
A final clip from the video shows Wickham in the car after attending the premiere of DAVID, where he reiterated his gratitude at being part of this project.
“Everybody cared so much about this story and this movie and brought it to life in such a beautiful way,” he said. “What an honor to be a part of it.”
Wickham spoke further on the topic in an interview with Billboard.
“I’ve always wanted to voice a character since I was eight, singing along to THE LION KING soundtrack,” he shared. “It’s a testament to how incredibly talented the whole team is that put this whole thing together. So much blood, sweat and tears from hundreds of people and for me to voice a character I care about a lot is a dream come true.”
Wickham continued, “I hope that this DAVID movie is just another kind of hinge point in people’s lives to help them understand or see maybe even for the first time that they’re not alone, that like David says, that the Lord is my shepherd, that we can place our lives in the hands of the good shepherd and that he cares for his sheep. I hope people are blessed by this movie and not just in an entertaining way, but a deep spiritual way, too.”
In a recent Instagram post, the singer-songwriter took a moment to shout out DAVID’s crew.
“Even though I’m one of the main characters, I honestly played such a small role in this incredible film,” Wickham wrote. “I’d like to take a moment to honor and brag on the hundreds of animators, storytellers, actors, directors, producers, investors and the entire team that brought the dream of this beautiful movie to life.
He continued, “Their passion and talent is clearly seen on the screen while you watch it. What a gift and a joy to work along side these very talented people to bring the hope, light and truth of this ‘God-Story’ to a whole new generation. I’m so proud to be a part of it.”
DAVID is now playing in theaters!
