More Detail:

Based on the true story of famed street poet Jim Carroll and his harsh encounters with sex, drugs and violence, THE BASKETBALL DIARIES stars Leonardo DiCaprio in a well-made visual journal depicting the lives of four Catholic school boys who go from being high school basketball stars to teenage junkies on the streets of New York City. After the death of his friend Billy, Jim enters a world of drug and alcohol abuse. After a friend rescues him from freezing weather and a term in jail, Jim rids himself of his addiction. The movie ends with Jim standing in front of an audience as they applaud him for his monologue on his life as a teenage junkie.

THE BASKETBALL DIARIES is an incredible dramatization of a teenager’s life on the streets of New York City. The acting is phenomenal, and the direction is superb. Although the language is fowl and includes blasphemy and cursing Jesus’ Name, it depicts the harsh world on the streets. The personal compromise necessary to obtain drugs leads to homosexual prostitution, mugging, stealing, and even murder. THE BASKETBALL DIARIES portrays life mixed with drugs as it truly is — painful and destructive to self, family and friends — and illustrates the desperation a drug addict feels while searching lonely streets for money and drugs.
