TAKING CHANCE

"Gripping Patriotic Drama"

Watch:

What You Need To Know:

TAKING CHANCE, based on a true story, deals with a desk jockey Marine, Lt. Col. Michael Strobl, played magnificently by Kevin Bacon, who volunteers to escort the remains of Lance Corporal Chance Phelps. Mike feels guilty for having been trained for war, but avoiding it by taking desk jobs. Although his rank is too high for a military escort, he requests the assignment to take Chance home. During the trip, he is constantly conflicted by the attention people pay to him, which he feels he does not deserve. Mike does his duty in an intensely personal manner, not only keeping to the letter of his job but also following its spirit.

TAKING CHANCE grips the audience’s attention at all times. There are many moments that elicit tears, patriotism, and fears. There are also deliberate signs of faith throughout the story. TAKING CHANCE is a deeply psychological drama that eventually comes down on the side of God and Country. The movie is really a journey of the soul, a journey we recommend everyone should take. It has brief foul language, alcohol use, and descriptions of wartime violence, but they are very mild.

Content:

(CC, BBB, PPP, PC, L, V, A) Strong Christian worldview with very strong moral premise, very strong patriotic content, but movie also brings up some politically correct anti-war sentiment; six obscenities; sounds of war violence and descriptions of wartime violence; no sex; no nudity; alcohol use but not excessive; no smoking or drugs; and, nothing else objectionable.

More Detail:

Based on a true story, TAKING CHANCE deals with a desk jockey Marine, Lt. Col. Michael Strobl, played magnificently by Kevin Bacon, who volunteers to escort the remains of Lance Corporal Chance Phelps. Mike feels tremendously guilty for having been trained for war, but avoiding it by taking desk jobs and computer analysis. Although his rank is too high to be a military escort, he requests the assignment to take the body of Chance Phelps home.

During the early part of the trip, Mike is constantly conflicted by the attention people pay to him. He feels he does not deserve it. Even so, he does his duty in an intensely personal manner, not only keeping to the letter of his job but also to the spirit of returning the body home.

TAKING CHANCE has many memorable moments, such as when Mike meets a pilot who knows the name of every dead soldier that’s been returned home on his plane, or the boy who wanted to sign up but didn’t want to cut his hair, or Chance’s family that doesn’t know how to deal with the loss. Eventually, Mike has to confront his pride and face the fact he is serving the country in a valuable way.

Although this is a meticulous, deliberate, well-paced movie, it grips the audience’s attention at all times. There are many moments that elicit tears, patriotism, and fears. TAKING CHANCE is a deeply psychological drama that eventually comes down on the side of God and country.

In fact, throughout the movie, there are deliberate signs of faith, from the airline attendant who blesses Mike and gives him a cross, to distinct mentions of prayer, courage, valor, and Heaven. Yet TAKING CHANCE is not an evangelistic movie. Nor does it fit a typical generic formulation or classification. It is really a journey of the soul that we recommend everyone should take.

TAKING CHANCE is slightly marred by brief foul language and descriptions of wartime violence, but these are very mild. See our special CONTENT section above to know more about the movie’s content.
