HOPPERS is officially Pixar’s biggest debut movie since 2017, taking in an estimated $88 million at the global box office.

“The well-reviewed comedy about a girl who ‘hops’ her consciousness into a beaver sold $46 million of tickets in the U.S. and Canada and $42 million overseas, according to Disney,” The Wall Street Journal reported

This is Pixar’s highest opening for a movie since 2017’s COCO.

The outlet also noted that HOPPERS’ success comes on the heels of remarks from Pixar’s Chief Creative Officer Pete Docter, who told WSJ that the studio is turning away from stories that might address more serious topics that children might not have discussed with their parents.

“We’re making a movie, not hundreds of millions of dollars of therapy,” he told WSJ.

In HOPPERS, which has received positive reviews from critics and audiences alike, the focus is on “this idea of how humans and animals coexist together,” director Daniel Chong told Disney. “That’s something that has always interested me.”

“It’s just a fascinating thing,” he continued. “These animals live on this planet with us and they’re these living beings and we don’t understand them completely. It’s just a really interesting part of our Earth that I love exploring.”

Star Piper Curda, who voices main character Mabel in the movie, spoke to Variety about what she hopes audiences take away from the role.

“She does not take no for an answer, which I think we all need a little bit more of,” the actress explained. “Being shown a character that never does that is really inspiring and empowering…what a cool thing it is that I get to play her.”

In an interview with Geeks of Color, Curda added, “I think her emotional complexity…was a really big hitter for me, because it’s just not something you see a lot, especially in movies for young people.”

“People who just struggle with emotion and are so flawed, and so complex. And I think that’s just so much of her beauty, and I hope it’s something that people can take away and feel seen by,” she continued. “And I just was really excited that I got to play her at all….she’s just so inspiring. In such a roundabout way. She doesn’t do what she does to inspire. She just is inspirational. And I think that’s really cool.”

HOPPERS’ continued success at the box office is proof that family-friendly movies will always win audiences over.
