Gwen Stefani recently reflected on the “miracle” of getting pregnant with son Apollo at age 43.
“I was desperate,” the pop star told Hallow. “I really wanted to have another baby. I really did. And I couldn’t and I was old. And then my oldest boy, Kingston, comes up to me. He’s like, ‘Mommy, I just really want you to have a baby.’ I said, ‘I’m sorry, your mommy’s too old to have a baby now.’”
Stefani recalled watching her son, who was 8 years old at the time, praying for a brother — “Like, ‘Please God, let my mom have a baby.’ And I was just sitting there going, ‘Wow, look at my little boy. He’s praying for me.’”
“I think it was like four weeks later and I was pregnant with Apollo,” she continued, “who I had at 44-years-old, naturally — totally a full-on gift.”

The former No Doubt frontwoman previously talked about how becoming a mother changed her life.
“I don’t take it lightly, and I’m so grateful that I have them, and I got to have three boys,” she said during an appearance on “The First One” podcast; Stefani shares Kingston, 19, Zuma, 17, and Apollo, 12, with ex-husband Gavin Rossdale.
The singer continued, “I don’t know why God chose me to be surrounded by boys my whole life, but here I am just surrounded by them, and I just feel really blessed. It’s really fun.”
She also reflected on becoming a first-time mom at 36, sharing, “I remember thinking, oh my gosh, I’m going to be a mom? Like, that’s going to be weird when people tell me I’m a mom. That word just sounded weird.”
“But I got over that really fast, and all I ever really wanted was to have kids,” Stefani continued. “I have this incredible mom, and my parents are still married and they were such an incredible example of true love and respect. And you have that growing up, it’s like, I want that, I want to be that, I want to be my mom when I grow up.”
Stefani’s husband, country singer Blake Shelton, has praised her for her commitment to family. When giving a speech at Stefani’s Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony, he recalled first meeting her while they were both working on THE VOICE.
“It was clear to me that she was a mother first and foremost over anything else in the world. That was her No. 1 job,” he said. “And now, standing here almost 10 years later, after I first met her, I can say without question that being a mother is still the most important thing in her life. I got to tell you all, that’s rare in this business.”
For Stefani, motherhood — and the “miracle” of her children — will always come before her high-profile career.
