Blake Shelton Says Gwen Stefani ‘Was A Mother First And Foremost’

By Movieguide® Contributor

Former THE VOICE coach Blake Shelton recently recalled the first time he met now-wife Gwen Stefani and how he knew she “wasn’t like any other famous person.”

“The first time that I ever met Gwen was in 2014,” Shelton said during a speech at Stefani’s Hollywood Walk of Fame star ceremony. “She wasn’t like any other famous person I had ever met before.”

The country star explained that “she drove herself to work in a black minivan with car seats in it. She didn’t roll in with security. She came in with a baby and two little boys – which at the time worked like security because at the time no one was going near [her]. It was chaos.”

“It was clear to me that she was a mother first and foremost over anything else in the world,” Shelton continued. “That was her No. 1 job. Now, standing here almost 10 years later, after I first met her, I can say without question that being a mother is still the most important thing in her life. I got to tell you all that’s rare in this business.”

He then praised Stefani for her songwriting and performing abilities, saying, “Gwen has blessed a lot of people’s lives…You deserve this, and I love you.”

Shelton and Stefani met while both serving as coaches on THE VOICE. They began dating in 2015 and tied the knot in 2021.

“I didn’t see any of this coming with Blake. This was just a big old ‘What?’” Stefani said of their relationship. “When I met Blake, that’s when I felt home. Like, ‘Oh, this is where I’m supposed to be, with this guy.’ It’s so true, and it was so automatic. This is such an amazing gift to experience love like that for the first time…He changed my life.”

Family is very important to both of the singers. Shelton is stepdad to Stefani’s three sons, Kingston, Zuma and Apollo.

“That’s a scary moment for me because it’s one thing for me to be with the kids all the time and be their buddy, but you do have to consider after a while that they start to listen to things that you say. There’s a lot of responsibility that comes with that,” Shelton said of his step-sons.

Movieguide® previously reported on Shelton’s commitment to family:

This year, country music star Blake Shelton revealed that 2022 would be his final year as a judge on the singing competition show, THE VOICE.

Shelton, who recently married Gwen Stefani, said that he wants to give his full attention to his duty as a the stepfather to Stefani’s three sons, Kingston, 16, Zuma, 14, and Apollo, 8.

“They’ve taught me something about myself that I never knew: I’m more than just a country singer or a goofy guy,” he told PEOPLE. “I’m someone they actually lean on, and that’s not a responsibility that I ever had and not something that I ever considered even being into.”

“Having kids, it truly does make you go, ‘Oh whoa. Wait a minute.’ This isn’t about me anymore and never will be again,’” he said. “If you don’t say that to yourself, I think you’re only hurting yourself because you’re going to miss out.”

“[Family] is what I want to invest in now,” he said.
