WISH UPON has a strong plot that drives the story forward. However, Clare is willing to go above and beyond for her wish box, even when she becomes aware she’s hurting the people closest to her by using it. The box actually unleashes a demonic entity that requires a blood sacrifice for every wish. Thus, WISH UPON has a pagan, occult worldview where evil is victorious. The abhorrent worldview in WISH UPON is accompanied by some extreme scary violence and plenty of foul language. WISH UPON would be less abhorrent if it had some positive cathartic release from its negative, objectionable elements.

WISH UPON is a horror movie about a teenage girl from a poor family who receives a mysterious box from her father that suddenly begins granting her every wish, wishes that also cause bizarre deadly accidents. WISH UPON has a strong plot that drives the story forward, but it contains an abhorrent pagan, occult worldview with some extreme violence and plenty of foul language, including more than 27 obscenities and profanities.
The beginning of the movie reveals that Clare has a troubled life, including being ostracized by high school classmates. One day she receives a strange box with Chinese symbols on it from her dumpster diving father. Since Clare is taking Chinese in school, she can read some of the words on it that say, “Seven wishes.”
Unsatisfied with the way her life’s going, Clare begins making wishes to the box. She wishes for things like popularity, for her crush to like her, and for her dad to be a lot cooler. Suddenly, these things start coming true.
As Clare starts to get everything she wants, however, the people closest to her die in freak accidents, and she realizes her life isn’t getting much better.
WISH UPON has a good plotline that continues to drive the story forward. As a result, it’s entertaining to watch.
However, the movie’s worldview is pagan because Clare is willing to go above and beyond for her wish box, even when she becomes aware she’s hurting the people closest to her by using it. WISH UPON also contains strong, scary occult elements, a suicide scene, foul language, and other objectionable content. The magical Chinese box actually summons a demonic entity that not only can make wishes come true but that also causes a blood sacrifice with each wish.
WISH UPON would be less abhorrent if it had shown the demonic evil could be defeated, especially if it could be defeated by biblical means.
