THE LOVE STORY OF LEONARD KNIGHT is one of the best documentaries. It opens with 2 Corinthians 12:9 and tells the story about a man who failed at everything and engaged in all the worldly sins, including a lot of drugs, only to come into a radical encounter with Jesus Christ that changes his life and allows him to reach 500,000 people with the Gospel.
Leonard is one of the few people who shares the Gospel with about 2,000 people a week and yet is completely humble. He says clearly, “I have nothing to offer.” How does he share the Gospel?
After a failed youth, he spent years building Salvation Mountain in the middle of the desert at a place called Slab City. No state has declared jurisdiction over Slab City, so it’s become an outcast refuge. California has said it won’t spend the money whether it has jurisdiction or not.
Therefore, Leonard started building this incredible artistic mountain complete and replete with colorful salvation messages about Jesus and God’s love. His Salvation Mountain became so popular that some universalist New Agers tried to influence him to drop Jesus from his testimony and take over Salvation Mountain. The filmmaker convinced Leonard he had to get back to Jesus and used Scripture verses such as 1 Corinthians 1:27 to help Leonard in his fading final years to become more enthusiastic in his personal testimony.

Finally, even though Leonard refuses to be called an artist, he has created an incredible work of art in Salvation Mountain, so much so that people come from all over the world to see it and be transformed.
The filmmaker, Patrick Rea, found Leonard because Salvation Mountain and Leonard were featured in the movie INTO THE WILD. One of the best interviews is with the real person who inspired the movie INTO THE WILD. THE LOVE STORY OF LEONARD KNIGHT is a must-see 40-minute documentary.
