Get ready to take another ride on the Magic School Bus.

“[Elizabeth] Banks is attached to star as adventurous teacher Ms. Frizzle in a live-action THE MAGIC SCHOOL BUS movie, with Legendary getting the rights to make the feature,” The Hollywood Reporter announced

DETECTIVE PIKACHU’s Rob Letterman is set to write a script treatment and direct the project.

This movie has been in the works since 2020, when it was first announced that Banks would be taking on the role of Ms. Frizzle in a live-action version of THE MAGIC SCHOOL BUS.

“We are delighted to bring to life the iconic Ms. Frizzle and her zest for knowledge and adventure in a fresh new way that inspires the next generation of kids to explore science and supports the dedicated teachers who help make science real and accessible for young learners every day,” Scholastic Entertainment’s Iole Lucchese said in a statement at the time.

Based on a book series of the same name, THE MAGIC SCHOOL BUS premiered in 1994. Each episode takes Ms. Frizzle and her class on a scientific adventure in the Magic School Bus, taking them everywhere from outer space to inside the human body.

“There’s just something about THE MAGIC SCHOOL BUS that stands out in terms of its quality, the impact that it had in its time and its continued impact today,” Virginia Tech Associate Professor Matt Wisnioski told WDBJ7.

Wisnioski and Radford University associate professor Michael Meindl studied the show and its impact on how children learned about science, particularly through entertainment.

“There was a National Science Foundation study in the late 1980s that demonstrated that kids spent more time watching TV in a week than they were at school, and so I think one of the goals of the National Science foundation was to try to meet really young kids where they were,” Wisnioski said, referring to the NSF’s major funding for the series.

Meindl added, “The education’s still relevant today, but it’s still an enjoyable show that children are still able to watch and laugh at. There’s a lot of these people out there in the sciences, science medical fields, etc. that really did get that passion for learning about science from the show.”

This upcoming version of THE MAGIC SCHOOL BUS will hopefully instill a love of learning about the world around them in a new generation of young people.
