What You Need To Know:
Viewers must have lots of patience to endure the telling of this story. The story often moves so slowly and in such a cryptic manner that it’s sometimes hard to know what’s happening. Also, the ending is rather strange and somewhat pretentious, although the movie does generate sympathy for the father and his daughter. However, HIGH LIFE contains lots of foul language and explicit sex and nudity, and some very strong violence. Ultimately, HIGH LIFE contains too much gratuitous, abhorrent content to be worthwhile.
Content:
Very strong pagan, immoral, somewhat obtuse worldview about a bizarre space mission to send a bunch of convicts (including some murderers apparently; official description of movie’s story says they all were death-row inmates, but that isn’t entirely clear from the movie itself on one viewing) to explore a black hole (one astronaut dies visiting one black hole and years later two surviving astronauts visit a second black hole), but movie has a cryptic allegorical ending that might suggest an afterlife though it’s too vague to assume much about it, plus the lead astronaut has some touching moments with his baby daughter (the mother has died), one of the movie’s only saving graces
39 obscenities (mostly “f” words), one GD, profanity, one Jesus profanity, two light profanities
Some extreme violence with blood includes woman commits suicide by taking on a deadly but unassigned space mission (she killed another female astronaut to ride the space capsule) to visit a black hole, and she’s seen with blood coming out of her face, and then her face exploding in her helmet as the G forces from the black hole hit the ship, man tries to rape another woman until he’s pulled off her and then hit by another man or two, female astronaut and medical officer drugs a man to fall asleep so she could take his sperm to impregnate another female astronaut (movie reveals the woman had killed her own children on Earth and has an obsession with creating a child in outer space; woman is part of a spaceship run by convicts), a fight with broken glass, a couple murders with blunt objects, man wraps several dead bodies in bags for corpses and tosses them out into space in one scene, and another disturbed woman commits suicide by simply walking out into space while wearing no spacesuit (her body is seen simply drifting away)
Extensive scene where totally nude woman pleasures herself on a large steal sex toy, partially depicted rape scene, attempted rape scene, medical officer drugs a woman to sleep and uses artificial insemination on her to impregnate her against her will
An image of genital female nudity, brief upper female nudity in two scenes, images of rear sexual and non-sexual nudity, and plenty of upper male nudity
Alcohol use and brief drunkenness
Brief smoking and medical officer drugs a man to fall asleep for nefarious purposes; and,
lying, deception, bullying, and cruelty.
