Tim Allen Shares Bittersweet Experience of Filming the Final Season of LAST MAN STANDING

By Movieguide® Staff

As Tim Allen’s LAST MAN STANDING enters its ninth and final season, the titular star said the end is bittersweet for everyone involved.

The 67-year-old actor, who plays Mike Baxter in the show, said that while he is proud of the show’s long tenure on ABC and FOX, it is painful to say goodbye to another character.

Allen told Fox News that every day of filming was “horrible” because everyone knew that they were inching closer to the final time on set.

“I thought it would be a good idea,” Allen said. “It was a terrible idea!”

“I feel like because we show up to work going ahhhhh (“crying”) I can’t…” co-star and on-screen wife Nancy Travis said.

Travis added that fans of the show could expect more of the same from the comedy’s final season.

“Just the everyday things that you ponder and wonder about…. the girls are grown now and they come in and out of our lives and we have grandchildren,” she said of the plot.

Allen will also reprise his HOME IMPROVEMENT role in the final season.

“It was really confusing for me to play Tim Taylor, who, I think of Mike Baxter is an evolution of that character. He’s smarter, went to college,” Allen noted. “We don’t know whether Tim Taylor was really stupid or really smart. I mean, I played the guy I wasn’t sure.”

Like HOME IMPROVEMENT, LAST MAN STANDING follows a family patriarch as he doles out wisdom to his wife and children.

“It was very peculiar to do both parts, I’ll tell you that. It was challenging for me to do both parts and kind of emotional,” Allen told Entertainment Weekly.

Allen said that much of his emotion came from his fond memories of HOME IMPROVEMENT co-star Earl Hindman, who died in 2003. Hindman played Allen’s neighbor, Wilson. The ABC comedy series ran from 1991 to 1999.

LAST MAN STANDING first appeared on ABC in 2011 before moving to FOX after the network canceled the sitcom after six seasons.

The ninth season premiered on Sunday, Jan. 3.
