THE GRACE CARD has raw Tyler Perry type moments, including some intense violence, racism and drug references. So, MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for younger viewers. The direction is a little rough also, including some inappropriate music, so THE GRACE CARD falls short of being a really great movie. As it is, however, it’s a very worthwhile movie that should be seen by those who like intense dramas with strong positive Christian content.

(CCC, BBB, L, VV, AA, DD) Very strong evangelistic Christian, biblical worldview with a strong rebuke of harboring bitterness, revenge and racism; one light profanity and one light obscenity; some intense violence, including child on bicycle gets hit by drug dealer escaping the cops off-camera, man hit on head by gun handle, boy shot in stomach, cop threatens to shoot junkie, junkie threatens to shoot cop, mention of lynchings, and throwing of dishes; husband and wife hug; no nudity; drinking to get drunk but implicitly rebuked; drug use implied since son has drug paraphernalia in his room, and characters talk about drugs, and all drugs rebuked; and, nothing else objectionable.

THE GRACE CARD is a very powerful and sometimes raw, but extremely redemptive, movie.
The story is about a policeman whose 5-year-old son got hit by an escaping drug dealer. Mac has been resentful ever since. He blames himself for forcing his son to ride the bike. He also takes out his anger on his wife, Sarah, and his other son, Blake. Not only that, but Mac also blames Latinos, blacks and everyone else for the loss of his son.
Then, Mack is teamed up with an African American policeman named Sam, who pastors a Pentecostal church. Sam is so professional in his work, he gets a promotion to sergeant. Mac is jealous and envious of Sam. Sam is trying to love Mac as a Christian, but is deeply angered at Mac’s racism and doesn’t understand Mac’s anger.
Sam’s grandfather, a preacher, gives Sam a grace card. The grace card says that his great-great-grandfather, a slave at the end of the Civil War, forgave the slave owner, prayed for him every day and asked the slave owner to forgive and pray for him every day in the end.
[SPOILER ALERT] Everything comes to a head between Sam and Mac when they go to investigate a robbery and Mac shoots the robber in the stomach, only to find out it’s his own son, Blake. Blake needs a miracle to survive, and so do Sam and Sarah.
THE GRACE CARD has some raw Tyler Perry type moments. Viewers who saw the movie with MOVIEGUIDE® commented these are real people with real problems. Even so, sometimes, the movie is not pretty. Therefore, there is a caution for younger children.
For example, THE GRACE CARD contains some intense violence and racism, plus the shooting of a son. Even so, the intensity of the movie is within faith film parameters and is not comparable to some MOVIEGUIDE(r) award winners such as DEAD MAN WALKING. So, Christian audiences and families should appreciate the movie.
On the other hand, the movie is very evangelistic, with great church scenes, great prayers and powerful conversions. These characters are truly sinners saved by grace. The acting is mostly very good, led by veteran star and Academy Award winner Louis Gossett, Jr.
THE GRACE CARD is a little rough around the edges with slow moments and some out-of-place music. Also, the movie has too many endings. The second ending starts a new story and raises unanswered questions.
THE GRACE CARD could have been tightened up considerably and become a really great movie. As it is, however, it’s a very worthwhile movie that should be seen by those who would like to see an intense drama with very strong Christian content.
