How NFL Defensive Back Tre Boston Walks By Faith While on the Sidelines

By Movieguide® Staff

After seven seasons in the NFL, defensive back Tre Boston sat out this season. While many would view the time spent on the sidelines as a setback, Boston said that God is teaching him to trust His plan and “walk by faith.”

The former Carolina Panther recently shared that he used this past year to deepen his relationship with his wife and their two children.

“I really get to be where my feet are, to be with my family,” Boston told Sports Spectrum’s Jason Romano. “It can be tough on a lot of guys who are so used to playing football year in and year out. But… to do more things with my time besides football has helped me transition.”

“I got a boy and girl [who] keep me on my toes,” he continued. “Be where your feet are, have fun with your family, know that God has you in this space for a reason and not even questioning Him. Having faith in His plan for you knowing that you don’t have to see the future… that’s just been me this season.”

Despite his time away from the NFL, Boston said that his passion to be present for his children is rare among his peers.

“I think again going back to God’s placement for me in life, I couldn’t imagine being away from my children right now in these pivotal years of them growing up,” he said. “I’ve heard a lot of stories about fathers in the league who aren’t there. And they’re disappointed in themselves, because they feel like they’ve missed something. I don’t have that feeling, like I’m missing football. I know that if God wants that plan for me, I’ll be back. But I love the feeling of being with my family, being a family man, being a father, being somebody who is dependable, and just in the present, to be there for my kids and my wife.”

Boston also applauded his wife of five years, Cierra Perry, for her care for their daughter and son.

“Wives are unbelievable when it comes to being mothers,” he said. “So to be here to help her raise these children, to wake up in the middle of night and just grab one of the kids if I need to if one’s crying, just to be able to hold them for a little bit before the wife gets to them, it just means so much more.”

While Boston hopes to return to the field, he said that he reached a point in his career where he listened to God to direct him instead of his desires.

The 29-year-old athlete revealed that he grew up in a one-parent household and did not take his faith seriously until he grew older. While Boston admits he was once motivated by money, he now is full of gratitude for God’s provision.

“I was allowing money to be my idol,” he explained. “I wanted money, money and God spoke to me and just said, ‘No, you need to go here.’ It was for the least amount of money that I could have picked up in free agency. I go [to LA] and have the best season of my career. I just allowed him to speak to me through my faith and knowing that he’s bigger than our understanding.”

“It’s been a true blessing just to allow him to use me, to have my faith in each walk of life, that He’s with me, that he has something better for me,” he continued. “I just have to stay true to it. I just have to believe in it. I just have to understand that there is more.”

Although Boston’s contentment is fueled by faith, he confessed that belief is difficult.

“It’s hard to believe and trust in the things that you don’t see, you don’t understand, that aren’t certain,” he said. “But for me, God has always been that beacon for me to be able to just know that He’s gonna be there. He’s gonna find a way for you. He’s gonna bless you abundantly as long as you stay true to Him.”
