What You Need To Know:

CHRISTMAS AT THE CABIN streaming on FaithChannel is about a married couple’s Christmas vacation that goes off the rails. Josh and Michelle are traveling to spend Christmas at the family cabin with Michelle’s sister, Poppy. However, when they get to the cabin, they find that Josh’s old college friend, Guy, has decided to crash there uninvited because he’s been evicted from his house. Michelle doesn’t get along with Guy, who often pokes fun at her. However, it’s not just Guy she starts getting irritated at, but everyone else. When she finally explodes, she rushes off into the Colorado wilderness, right as a vicious storm descends. While her family prepares to go find her, Michelle stumbles on someone who might be able to help her.

CHRISTMAS AT THE CABIN promotes Christian faith and prayer, but it struggles to be effective and genuine. Despite some funny moments, the movie falls flat with disjointed dialogue and unnecessary scenes. There’s some light offensive content, including a scene where people rebuke a man for making an inappropriate comment about a woman. So, MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for older children.

More Detail:

CHRISTMAS AT THE CABIN streaming on FaithChannel follows a couple’s rollercoaster Christmas vacation in the woods. When Josh and Michelle, along with Michelle’s sister, Poppy, decide to spend Christmas at their family cabin, they are in for a big surprise. Upon arriving, they find signs that someone else is living in the vacant cabin. They enter to find Josh’s best friend from college, Guy, squatting in the cabin. He had been evicted from his house and needed a place to stay. After a heated exchange with her husband, Michelle gives her consent for him to stay for Christmas.

Things start going downhill, however, when Guy starts getting on Michelle’s nerves. He continually pokes fun at her, is ungrateful and doesn’t help out in any way around the house. Michelle is already on edge from a recent business deal that had collapsed before coming to the cabin. Soon, she finds herself not just annoyed at Guy but at Josh and Poppy too. They all try to help her when they can, but even the slightest thing sets her off. It doesn’t take long until Michelle has had enough. She storms out of the house one day and into the woods.

As she vents her anger at God and at her family, Michelle doesn’t watch where she’s going and ends up stepping on an animal trap. With a hurt foot, no sense of where she is, and a snowstorm billowing in from the North, things look bleak. That is, until an unlikely stranger shows up.

CHRISTMAS AT THE CABIN runs into some major quality issues. It starts slow with an expectation that the pace will pick up, but that never really happens. When the climax finally appears, it is weak and falls flat. While things are rough on the wide picture, the individual scenes have their own set of problems. The conversation is disjointed and feels heavily scripted and inauthentic. The scenes are often long and slow, with lots of unnecessary content that doesn’t further the story in any way.

To give the filmmakers and actors credit, they do try their best to make it comedic, and some scenes do have a good laugh. The clarity and cinematography are also good for the budget and fit the movie’s tone.

CHRISTMAS AT THE CABIN portrays a strong Christian worldview. People pray openly in the movie, and Scripture is quoted. Unbelievers talk about God and are curious to understand more. However, the way all of it is displayed often feels disconnected or inauthentic. There is minimal offensive content in the movie. Drinking is seen, and struggles with alcohol addiction are brought up and discussed briefly. Also, an inappropriately lewd comment is made, and a husband and wife are shown kissing multiple times. MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for older children.
