Alec Baldwin Facing Multiple Lawsuits After Tragic RUST Shooting

By Movieguide® Contributor

Alec Baldwin is opening up about the tragic shooting that took place on the set of upcoming Western RUST.

The actor said that there were “two victims” in the shooting, referring to himself along with the deceased Halyna Hutchins.

“From the beginning, from the moment this happened, everybody has put out — besides all the anguish and the suffering, horrible feelings we have and, of course, there are two victims and nobody else is a victim, so to speak — we have dealt with a situation where specific people are not as interested in finding out what really happened,” Baldwin said

“What you have is a certain group of litigants on whatever side, who their attitude is, well, the people who likely seem negligent have enough money,” he continued. “And the people who have money are not negligent, but we’re not gonna let that stop us from doing what we need to do in terms of litigation. Why sue people if you’re not going to get money? That’s what you’re doing.”

Baldwin also compared movie set deaths to deaths in other industries, urging people to “think of all the billions of rounds of ammunition that were fired on movie and TV sets in the last 75 years, and four people have died” and then “compare that record to the opioid industry, the airline industry, the automobile industry, the gun industry itself.”

His comments about the shooting have angered Hutchins’ husband, Matthew, who recently spoke to TODAY SHOW co-anchor Hoda Kotb.

“The idea that the person holding the gun and causing it to discharge is not responsible is absurd to me, but gun safety was not the only problem on that set,” he said. “There were a number of industry standards that were not practiced and there’s multiple responsible parties.”

Lawyers have filed a wrongful death suit on behalf of him and his son, naming Baldwin and others “who are responsible for the safety on the set” as defendants. Additionally, many other crew members have filed lawsuits against Baldwin and the RUST production.

“I’m very hopeful when the facts come out we will not be held criminally responsible, but it has changed my life,” Baldwin said. “And I don’t mean this in the ordinary sense that I was involved in something or somebody passed,” he said. “I mean, I was involved in a situation with somebody was killed. It’s changed my life just in terms of the function of weapons in films and television.”

Movieguide® previously reported on Baldwin’s response to the tragedy:

In a new video, Alec Baldwin is sharing how spiritual and religious guidance from others is helping him through the tragic killing of RUST cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.

The actor thanked those who have been “kind and thoughtful and generous in spirit” in the aftermath of the fatal shooting, calling their support “just incredible.”

“We live in a world where there’s just oceans of negativity, online and so forth, and one must find a way to manage that,” he shared, adding that he has turned to religious and spiritual advisers to help him “manage [his] feelings better.”

“The one thing I do want to consider very carefully in this coming year and really push myself is in terms of trying to not allow the negativity in my life to affect me,” the actor continued. “I’ve been having some very interesting phone calls with some very interesting people who I will not name but some of them rather well-known people who deal in all kinds of behavioral, philosophical, religious, spiritual, meditation, all kinds of ways to attain a state of mind where you really short circuit all of the negative in your life.”
