Disney to Expand FROZEN Story Through New Podcast

By Movieguide® Contributor

Disney announced it will continue the FROZEN story through a new podcast, launching this October.

In conjunction with ABC Audio and Walt Disney Animation Studios, “The new audio series brings back beloved characters from Arendelle—including Anna, Elsa and Olaf—and introduces some new faces for an epic new journey, set after the events of FROZEN 2,” Good Morning America reported.

New characters, including Queen Disa, Lord Wolfgang and magpies Astrid and Magnus, will appear on the podcast with voice presenter Ginger Zee, ABC News’ chief meteorologist.

“The series follows Queen Anna, who has a lot on her plate—there are visitors in her Kingdom, a friend in need, and even the Duke of Weselton’s nephew skulking around—so when the Spirits of Nature start acting up, she knows she has to solve the problem – and fast – before things get more out of control,” Deadline wrote.

Movieguide® celebrated FROZEN’s themes of sacrificial love and redemption, giving it a content rating of +3. While FROZEN II also contained those ideas, the story was somewhat marred by subtle environmentalist themes, spiritism and animism, scoring a -1 content rating. Parents should be aware that these themes may carry over into the podcast.

“ABC Audio is thrilled to introduce the power of audio storytelling to a new generation through the Disney FROZEN Podcast,” Liz Alesse, VP, ABC Audio, stated. “This immersive series created in partnership with Disney Publishing Worldwide and Walt Disney Animation Studios taps into listeners’ imagination and offers parents an engaging, screen-free experience to share with their children.”

“For almost a decade, Disney Publishing has journeyed through Arendelle with Anna, Elsa and Olaf—from storybook collections to middle-grade adventure stories. We are excited to continue telling new stories in this world through this spell-binding audio-first offering,” Lynn Waggoner, Vice President of Global Publishing, Franchise Content, and Creative, stated in a press release.

“The Disney Frozen Podcast is an expansive endeavor made possible through deep collaboration with creative teams across our company, setting a new standard for engaging kids podcasting content,” she concluded.

Disney will release twelve episodes in October, which will be presented by Macy’s.

Movieguide® previously reported on FROZEN II:

FROZEN II voice actor Jonathan Groff’s character, Kristoff, embarks on a transformative journey in the new movie as he learns to overcome fear with love.

Filmmakers of FROZEN II weave this theme throughout the movie in many ways. For example, Anna (Kristen Bell) and Kristoff continue to date as boyfriend and girlfriend, but Kristoff wants more: marriage.

Comically, Kristoff attempts to propose to Anna several times, but to no avail. Despite the bumps in the road, Kristoff continues in his pursuit of love…

Groff relayed, “I think that making the true love in the first film about familial love and making the center of the story these two sisters is part of what FROZEN does.”

Groff unpacked how the movie differs from other recent Hollywood stories, “[FROZEN II] continues to challenge your expectations of what the stories are,” said the GLEE alum. “I think for Kristoff, like Kristin [Bell] said earlier, ‘You feel what you feel and your feelings are real.’”
